2 Reviews of the Canvas & Cast 4m Bell
By: Scotsgordon Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2012 Rating:
Having decided on a bell tent after much research eventually settled on Canvas & Cast due to the higher specification offered; heavier canvas, wooden pole etc and I also like the porthole windows in the doors.
Tent with zipped in groundsheet (ZIG) ordered in February 2012 for delivery by end April 2012 (booked up camping activity for May bank holiday). Received assurances several times it would be delivered on time until a week before when I was told there were delivery delays and it wouldn't be there on time. Explaining I had to have a tent fot the b'hol weekend C&C offered to send me a pegged in g'sheet tent (PIG) they had in stock. I agreed and paid for PIG on the understanding I could exchange it for ZIG when ZIG was available and pay price difference or could keep the PIG if I wanted to. The PIG arrived 2 hours before we left to go camping, so cutting it a bit fine! (C&C also sent me some free camping goodies). I used the PIG two weekends running and was really pleased with it however when C&C phoned to say the ZIG had arrived I decided to exchange the PIG for the ZIG. Tents were duly exchanged only for me to find that despite the tent being described as ZIG on the bag it was in fact a sewn in g'sheet (SIG) version! Contacted C&C who discovered their entire shipment of ZIG were in fact SIG. They offered me a choice of a full refund if I returned the SIG or if I kept it they would refund the extra I had paid to upgrade from PIG to ZIG so I would have a SIG for the price of a PIG (hope you are keeping up). Kept the SIG and all was well until a few weeks later when I ordered an inner tent, which attaches to main tent by way of some snap together buckles some of which were missing from my tent. Contacted C&C who arranged another exchange for a replacement SIG.
So what to make of the above?. The non delivery and other problems should not have happened, but that said they did do everything they possibly could to correct them and to make up for them. Whether this encourages you to choose C&C or not is a choice only you can make.
All I can say is I've had the tent for coming on a year and I'm delighted with it.

I opted to buy a bell tent because they are quick to put up (around 15 minutes single-handed) and yet will sleep a family of four easily.
The max berth of 10 is if you all sleep on camping mats (not airbeds) and arrange yourselves like the spokes of a wheel. If you use the optional inner tent you cut down your sleeping space by half.
Being able to roll up the sides is a joy on a sunny day, this tent is actually quicker and less fiddly to erect than our square green nylon gazebo (you know the sort), yet the canvas shields you from the sun and a nice breeze can blow through. The kids adore it when the sides are up, calling it a flying saucer.
I had been concerned about creepy crawlies without the benefit of a SIG or ZIG, but this tent has long 'cuffs' (for want of a better word) that are tucked under the ground sheet - so that the end result it feels pretty enclosed and not at all drafty as you sometimes get with tent walls that only reach as far as the ground.
I decided to buy my bell tent from Canvas & Cast rather than SoulPad or Bell Tent/Obelink because:
1. They do natty designs, I have the Tribal Blue design from 2009
2. The canvas is heavier, though this is a bit of pro and a con
3. C&C bell tents have a waxed strip sewn into the seams making it waterproof from the first outing (sometimes canvas tents need to get a thorough soaking first time out to swell the fibres properly)
4. All the sliders etc are wooden and the guylines are rope as standard (no need to buy an optional accessory pack)
5. The tent pegs aren't wooden, but goodness, I've never seen anything like them, as thick as a thumb and cast out of solid steel by the looks - these are not going to bend, of course you need a substantial hammer to get them in the ground, which C&C provide with the tent.
6. If you think you might ever want a stove the C&C tents have a stove exit hole as standard, with kevlar surround and a velcroed panel to keep the rain out while you save up for that stove - we call it the 'cat flap'.
I can well imagine never buying another tent - well maybe the 3m bell as a pup tent. The parts (that there are) are easily replaceable and in the event of damage to the canvas it can be patched over. Just be sure to put it away dry.

Manufacturer's Description
The canvas bell tent is a design classic that has probably sheltered more heads than any other tent in history. Manufactured from heavy weight 350G NATURAL canvas the Canvas and Cast bell tent is both extremely durable as well as beautiful to behold. Roll up the sides of this bell tent during the day and the bell tent seems to float on the breeze. Our new 2010 bell tent has many more refinements including an additional three point toggle closure at the door, natural sisal rope ties, optional wooden pole and pegs and round door windows.
Our bell tents maybe a little more expensive but their far superior specification makes them much better value for money. The heavier weight canvas, groundsheet, poles, pegs and guy lines make every aspect of the tent more durable. The additional design improvements also make the tent more user friendly.
