5 Reviews of the Da Gama 6

By: Justposted  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2013   Rating:

I am here to report the death of my da Gama 6. It served well as a family tent with some excellent features: 3 zip-separated pods, side entry as well as big front entry (side is good for rainy days), enormous headroom. Downsides were: really heavy, flat high front means vulnerable to wind, tendency to let some water in and, the killer blow, cheap zinc (?) zips that corrode if left damp (I tried my hardest to dry out before repacking at home) resulting in otherwise-fine tent being thrown in the bin. Did us well for about 25 trips over 6 years.

We bought this tent 2nd hand in 2014 for less than £60. It had been returned to the supplier with damage to one of the zips, one detached pod loop and alleged leaking near the side window. The 'damage' took less than an hour to fix and although we have camped in heavy rain we are yet to discover the leak!

The tent has 3 bedrooms along the back, two of which are joined by a full zip that can be opened up to make one large pod.

The living area is large enough for a table and 4 chairs when needed and we comfortably ate inside during wet weather.

It is missing a porch area but we plan to purchase the front extension at some point. As a weekend tent it has been perfect though and pitches quickly. I used a YouTube clip and was able to pitch within half an hour by myself.

The bag is heavy but I would imagine that most mid size tents with full sewn in ground sheets have this problem.

We also have a Kampa Filey 6 with front vestibule. Having used the da gamma twice now, we are thinking that rather than being a quick pitch weekend tent, we may take it on longer breaks and it could well replace our larger tent!

I bought this tent as a package with the front extension, footprint and carpet last summer and was very impressed with it.

As previously mentioned it is a large tent and can be tricky to erect the first time you use it. However after watching a couple of useful videos over the internet we soon got the hang of it.

I would highly recommend this tent if you are after a family tent and have transportation as it is not the lightest one around.

I bought this tent as an ex display end of season bargain, and a bargain it was for £35. However, it was clearly in need of a waterproofing/UV replenishment and that cost me another £22. It also had a broken front door zip which was mentioned in the advertisement.

There is a video on utube showing how to erect this tent single handedly and by following that I was able to fully erect it on my own in 20 minutes. This tent though has more guys and pegging points than any other tent I have owned and takes quite a time pegging out.

Even if it only lasts a few trips I think it is money well spent. It is a very decent sized tent with a feel of quality although the bedroom pods sag a little and my head touches the roof of them at the back (5'8') I am guessing that two people in each pod would be a little tight so I would rate this tent as a 3-4 person for comfort. Two of the bedrooms can be made into one by removing the zipped in partition curtain. By doing this a camp bed just fits comfortably width ways.

After the first camping trip the second door zip broke but with some effort I was able to repair them both. It seems that the hasps just pull off the bottom, so I have now stuck some tape on the bottom of all the zips to prevent the hasps totally reaching the bottom.

After a couple of erections in the garden and one camping trip on a dry and windless couple of days I obviously haven't tested it thoroughly but first impressions are good and I can't fault much. I did find the EHU lead slot very small and it was quite a squeeze to get the blue and white plug through. I did notice that when zipping up the doors from the inside the flaps outside which cover the zips don't automatically fold across and seal onto the velcro and I would imagine rain could probably get behind the flaps and leak in through the zips.

These are all minor irritations though and bearing in mind the tent could well have been on display in all weathers for 9 months last year it seems to be lasting well.

I would recommend it to anyone seeking a large easy to erect tent for all occasions.

Recently returned from 2 weeks at Sea Barn Farm,in Dorset.Extremely pleased with our Da Gamma 6,plenty room, completely waterproof, draught proof, easy to put up/take down.We had 2 nights of high wind and rain,no problems.Well ventilated in hot weather.Would recommend to anyone wishing a well designed modern tent, easy to erect for a weekend and big enough for a whole holiday.Bedroom was big enough for a queen size, double height airbed, and the front door can be poled out as a sun awning, though poles and guys are not supplied.
