1 Reviews of the Darwin 2 Plus
By: Outwell42 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2021 Rating:
I bought this tent to see if I preferred it to my Coleman PhactX2. The tent, poles and pegs come in a compact zipped valise with handles that are a little too long for my preference. Overall weight is 4.25kG, a bit heavy by modern backbacking standards, but half the weight of my Relum 'Canadian' ridge tent that I used to lug around.
The tent pitches inner first, the sleeping chamber being clipped to two cross over fibreglass poles. This makes for entertainment until you work out how to support the first pole and get the clips on. Using the tie strap, and with careful pegging, the inner pitches with drum like tightness. The outer flysheet has tie straps and velco loops to keep it positioned over the dome. A 3rd pole with a 'Gothic Arch' forms a porchway in a configuration used by many tents. There is a groundsheet extension that clips up in the porch to form a bathtub effect. Judicious guying gets the outer tight and smooth, my example being very well put together. Ventilation is provided by 4 lift up louvres and a zipped mesh panel in the inner door. There are exactly the right number of conventional round steel legs supplied in a small bag.
Coleman claims this is a 2 person tent but really it's just a comfortable size for one person and all their gear. There are just two small side pockets for personal storage, contrasting with the PhactX2 that has pockets the full length of the tent on both sides.
In a blistering hot July I regretted not having 2 doors to allow a through draught, the tent reaching very high internal temperatures. Nevertheless, I became chilly on a couple of clear nights, resorting to my sleeping bag's hood.
The doorways are side hinging with tie loops. It might seem a small point but doors that top hinge allow the tent flap to drape dew all over you as you clamber out in the early morn.
I only experienced one rainy episode and the tent was bone dry inside.
I found that the pointy shape of the inner meant I was forced toward the centre of the tent to avoid the sidewalls.
After experiencing 10 days in the PhactX2 and 10 days in the Darwin2+ immediately afterwards, I decided to keep the Phact and sell the Darwin, despite the droopy door of the Phact.
