1 Reviews of the Darwin 2

By: Jamesvolunteer  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2019   Rating:

The Coleman Darwin 2, is a simple dome tent that weighs around 2.8kg. I bought it for the purposes of cycle touring, and camping in friends gardens. I paid aprox £55. RRP is £75.

First of all, I noticed the similarity between the Coleman and the Arpenaz 2 (recently rebranded as the MH100) from Decathlon which I also own. The Decathlon is a little lighter, but is almost identical in size and pitching style. Also it is at least half the price of the Coleman. However, the Coleman does feel more refined, and has much better ventilation options.

The Darwin has a 3000mm HH and is definitely waterproof in practice. It has a smidge more clearance between the inner and fly than the Arpenaz, which helps, especially in windy, wet weather.

There is decent head clearance in the tent for sitting (100cm) and a small, zippable mesh piece in door for ventilation/spying on people.

The poles are your standard, basic fibreglass. Aluminium poles I suppose are not cost effective on tents like this, which is understandable, but I do always wince a bit when hearing a little creak or crack from the poles.

Pitching ease is good. It's a 10 minute job. There is a small porch, which should just about fit a pair of boots. The fly is pegged separate from the inner, which in my view is an oversight. You either need to not peg the inner, or take extra pegs if you want to use guylines.

This is a tent that I've had my eye on for a while. I'm a sucker for cheap, basic tents, and the Darwin 2 gets a fair bit of love online. If I'm brutally honest, while not disappointed with the tent, it is not quite better enough than the nearest competition from Decathlon to warrant twice the price in my opinion.

Having that extra bit of faff when pegging the fly is a little annoying. However, it looks like a nice tent to my eyes. I'm somewhat of a Coleman fan, and the dark green, lantern logo look is nice. It's definitely a bonus that ventilation has been thought about with some seriousness, as this doesn't always happen with this type of tent.

It probably a bit heavy for bicycle touring, but I got fed up of trying to find a good all rounder that wasn't expensive of that had mixed reviews, so decided to take a punt on this.

All in all, I think it was worth the price of a night in a Travelodge but at full RRP there are probably better options.
