2 Reviews of the Fremont 8

By: Candgf  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2011   Rating:

We got the Fremont on offer at the end of the year so paid a very good price for it.

This is a huge tent plenty of room great head hight we used the detachable double bedroom pod as storage which is great ur not tripping over bags and boxes.

Very easy to pitch as the bedrooms are left in so your almost set up as soon as the tent is up. You have to have at least 2 people to put it up as its so big, all the poles are colour coded and the instructions are sewn on to the tent bag so no loosing them, although its so simple you don't really need them.

The awning is huge and makes a great kitchen / eating area, and zips on to the main tent very easily.

The only cons I would say there is with the tent is there isn't enough ties for the electric cable for the light from the roof so we had to used one of the ties on the side door to hold the cable out of the way so we didnt hang our selves. The zips between the main tent and awning are very annoying as they undo from right to left and with the removable bedroom in it makes it very fiddly to zip and unzip! it would have been better to turn the bedroom around to go along the back wall instead of the door way like Coleman have in the fremont6. Having said that we do prefer the Fremont to any other on the market at the moment.

We did have to have our first tent replace the fly sheet as our first one was missing one of the clips on the outer fly sheet that clips to the poles, but Coleman did this without a problem.

Our first time out with the tent it rained very heavily and we have a few leaks on some of the seams and the awning seemed to leak more, we are just going to get some seam sealer and spray on waterproofer for the tent. It did rain very hard though.

The only problem we really have with the tent is Coleman appear to not have made a footprint for it so were going to have to make our own to protect the tent base.

This tent also lets in lost of light so even on a dull day its quite bright. The tent with the carpet in is very warm too, we went and the temperature dropped to almost 1 degree but with a heater we were lovely and toasty.

Like I've said the only real negative points are no footprint and the zips could have been designed better and the bedroom turned but it still is a very spacious tent plenty of room for kids to play and you to relax cant wait to go away with it again.

Pros:

1. Huge tent, loads of headroom - One HUGE bedroom and two smaller ones that will comfortably accommodate two children EACH (two adults would probably fit as well but would be a bit of a squeeze), large living area and more than big enough kitchen/porch area.

2. AMAZING value for money, I paid far less than the RRP, all other tents that I have seen of this size have been at least £200 more than the price I paid.

3. The kitchen/porch area at the front is detachable. So if you wanted you could opt for a smaller pitch and save some money.

4. Despite it's size, once you get the hang of it, it doesn't take that long to put up and take down.

5. Large windows let in lots of lovely light.

6. Large side door with mosquito net means lots of lovely ventilation.

7. The third bedroom in the living area can be removed if not required, making the living area even BIGGER!

Cons:

8. Our first tent leaked very badly at all the seams, we returned it for a replacement which we currently still have. This second one was tested in very heavy rain and although it also leaked it was only a couple of drops from a couple of seams; liveable with and easily fixed with some seam sealant. It would appear though that it could possibly be a common flaw with this model, having said that leaking from seams is not unusual.

9. There is a mosquito net on the very front porch door, which I don't see the point of as there is not a built in ground sheet in this area, we never used it and could happily have done without it. It meant that there were too many zips which was fiddly.

10. In general the zipper designs were fiddly and cumbersome, with too many zips and strange ideas like being double ended on the vertical! and only single ended on the horizontal. This was particularly awkward as it meant that, when closed, the horizontal zip at the bottom could only be opened from the side obstructed by the third bedroom!

All in all though an awesome tent for the money.

P.S. This isn't exactly a con for the tent more for the Premuim Side Canopy and a word of warning for Fremont owners. Despite what Coleman may say the Premium Side Canopy does not really fit the Fremont tents, it's more designed the Mackenzie's. There are massive gaps at the side and bottom making it completely unweatherproof and therefore basically unusable for storing anything in. To be honest we found there was more than enough room in the tent anyway.
