9 Reviews of the Matrix X9
By: Little* + Mouse Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2009 Rating:
Key Points:
Good head height throughout.
Good living space throughout.
Nice and airy
Windows - avoid feeling cooped up.
1 issue very slight leakage when heavily rained*.
We brought the Matrix X9 as it at the time was the only FULL head height tent available in the UK, the Outwells at the time said they were FULL 6ft head height but this was not throughout, the sleeping compartments and outer edge sloped (worth viewing tents that claim to be Full head height before purchasing if this is important)
The Matrix X9 and X6 are Full 6ft head height throughout. Which is great if your tall and/or if you have disabilities.
It is a well laid out tent with the compartments square on so you can have a large middle area by removing the middle sleeping compartment if you need to which a large table can be placed in (we have had a long wallpaper pasting table in it and still had room). It also has good living space with all 3 bed compartments in even on rainy days, With a table chairs and Adults mulling around.
It takes 2 of us 1 hour to put it up as we are short I am 5ft 3 and my partner is 5ft 7 and this is a very large tent. But it is possible to put up with 2 people. All colour coordinated poles and sewn in instructions with Bag which is included (bag has handy wheels)
(You may be asking at such short heights why 6ft was important to us - well 1) we have tall Family & Friends and use this on group trips and 2) I have a medical condition and joint issues so like having the camping luxuries and a tent with space to accommodate them)
The sleeping compartment of which there are 3. Are Large.
We are able to fit a Double Height Colemans Queen size air bed + Feather King size duvet in the compartments and still have space either side of the bed.
We use the 3rd normally for storage of clothes and kitchen items. But if you had normal sized double airbeds there is amble space in the sleeping compartments.
The tent has a nice 'porch type' area which is good for taking shoes off before you enter and extra storage.
It has zipper bits for electrical hookup etc as well.
The main tent and the sleeping compartments have zipped up curtains allowing light to be let in on the rainier days but in general its a very nice light tent due to its light grey colour.
It also has zipperble air vents which are great on those rare UK sunny days.
* The only small issue we have with this tent is that it has leaked on us. But not much! and only in the main 4 corners. This has only happened in HEAVY non stop rain. The first time I sent the tent back (but was told it had not been weathered in as it was new?!) the 2nd time I gave up to be honest as we love the tent other wise and its no great deal its minor drips - BUT we are not sure if this is how we are putting it up as the poles are very close to the fabric and this could be causing a capillary action and slight dripage.
The sleeping area is very dry and cozy during the rain.

Picked one of these up fairly cheap on eBay back in February after reading the reviews here. I have to say that I'm very impressed by it. We took it down to Christchurch, Forest of Dean over Easter where it was subjected to plenty of rain, strong wind and even snow/hail at one point. Not a single drip inside the tent. I did manage to break a couple of poles putting it up, hence 9 out of 10, but even then it more than did what was asked of it. The children loved the roominess of it, we used the 3rd sleeping pod as a storeroom, and I loved being able to stand up to my full 2m height in it. A great, well made, comfortable tent.

Having read many reviews on this tent here I decided to purchase one.
Delivery was very quick and it came in a sturdy bag on wheels. We've just returned from a trip to Croyde . The tent was easy enough to put up 2 people a must, however it was destroyed by strong winds in the early hours of the morning. Having a young family we had to evacuate quickly. The poles which are carbon fibre snapped under the wind pulling the guide ropes with it!. I have now insisted on a full refund from the store however they have refused; they have awful customer service so beware!
I've now ordered a Vango Amazon which has steel poles and is far more sturdy. If you're going to use the matrix or buy one best only use it when there is no wind about. Not a happy chap.

Massive tent, so much space. You need at least 2 or 3 to put it up and down. Bought it for 199.99 real bargain. Only issue to remember is to check with the site you are going to if the pitches are big enough as we did have some difficulty finding a pitch large enough for this tent at 1 site we visited recently. If you want acres of room and want the feeling of comfort then this is the tent for you.

This is a stunning tent.
Quality of workmanship is excellent.
Totally waterproof during a full night of heavy rain.
Acres of space and a light/airy feel to it.
It's heavy so vehicle needs to be suitable but goes up and comes down without any problems.
Bought this tent for £199.00 and it's an absolute bargain.
Highly recommended.

This is a very spacious tent. The bedrooms easily accommodate 3 adults in each. The living area again is huge with ample headroom throughout for 6 footers and above. Erecting took about 45 minutes but another 20 minutes of twiddling was needed to get it set just right. Fully sewn-in groundsheet with secondary SIG's to each bedroom make it very snug. There are fresh-air vents built in to each section of the tent and this is filtered through to the bedrooms giving fresh air without draughts. After a night of heavy rain the tent was completely dry inside despite being pitched on slightly sloping ground. This is a big tent and therefore consideration should be given to how it will be transported as it would probably be too bulky and heavy for the average saloon or hatchback. A beautiful tent and IMO great value for money.

We got this tent a few weeks ago, and managed to get away this weekend for a couple of nights with the kids.
Putting the tent was ok for the first time, it took around 45 minutes, and a further 1/2 hour to finish off setting the guy ropes, and pegging down.
We are more that happy with the room inside, the living area was plenty for us, and if you look at the pictures we have posted, the carpet is 2.3m x 2.3m. The sleeping pods were great, we did not have to bend our heads, when inside them. Our two kids had one side pod each, with a single air bed, and there was clearly room for them to party in there as well. We used the rear sleeping pod, this has two doors, front and back, which allows you to use the back door in the tent, if you do not want to take the pod down. Each sleeping pod has 3 pockets in to hold you suff while you sleep.
The front pod is what we used as the kitchen area, and was not cramped at all, this also has side windows, that have a toggled cover, for privacy.
Only downfall we can see is, if we do not want to use all three sleeping pods, the windows have no covers, so not the most private.
That aside we are more than happy and can't wait to get away again, 7 weeks and counting.
If anyone knows of a good porch/canopy that will fit the Matrix, please let us know, as we like to have the door open, but can not when it rains.

I agree with the above review, it took us about an hour to put up, not bad considering the the kids where helping. Internal space is massive, with 3 detachable sleeping pods, we took the pod out which is opposite to the front to give more living space. We had the older 4 kids in one pod and the baby and dog in with us. Only problem with such a large tent is keeping it warm at night, we'll be getting a heater for next time. It's a massive weight at 42kgs not something you can just pick up and go.
We haven't worked out what the flap near the entrance is for either.
For £200 it's a great family tent and good value.

Purchased this on a whim when I spotted it for £199 at best-buys
Took me and another 40 minutes to put up and we were amazed by the quality of workmanship and the shear size of it.
Has three great sized bedroom inners, each with plenty of space for 2 and comfortable for 3, a great sized living area with a good sized porch, boot room.
Bedrooms separate from external shell and benefit from windows that open with a flyscreen.
Was fully waterproof during a 2 hour downpour with the sewn in groundsheet staying dry also.
All in all a great bargain and will be staying with the family for some time to come, to be honest you could sleep 9 in the bedrooms and probably another 6 in the living area.
Centre of living area has a vent light which held a strip light (electric pitch) with no issues.
Came down in about 20 minutes and packed away in the wheely bag without a struggle.
Only issue potentially the weight, but not a major issue.
And if the small opening at the entrance is a cat flap??
A stunning looking tent with bags of space for rainy days.
