We needed to downsize our Sunncamp Haven8 tent as our kids have now grown up. Chose the Coleman Mosedale 5 as it seemed a reasonable price, only has 3 poles and we liked the blackout bedroom. We now sleep much better in it and for longer than our previous tent. However, I can't imagine 5 people actually using the tent without an extension - but for 2 people its a good size. We have used this tent on 4 separate occasions so far since 2018 and it has seen all types of weather - extreme heat and monsoon rains! We bought a front extension last year and now use it as the kitchen area, leaving more living space inside the tent. We added a carpet this year as we were using it for a full week and couldn't be sure of the weather. It made the tent very cosy! We can pitch the tent in 20 minutes and it comes down very quickly and packs easily into its bag. I've read that some people have had issues with poles and the blackout material, but we haven't had any issues. We always make sure the tent is fully aired and dry when packing away.

We bought this tent in May 20 we have used it several times since then. A fantastic size, amazing black out bedroom. Plenty of room, with the added porch. Comfortable with the carpet.
Looking forward to trips away next year using this tent.
I have purchased an extra carpet for the bedroom to make it even more comfortable.
Only downside one opening for EHU.

Have seen some of the reviews on issues with the poles.
We have used this now for 4 camping weekends and the first three were all fine, however on the last one, the rear poles seemed tight and one started to split. Duct tape and some tent pegs lashed it up OK, and running the poles through again to make sure they were right sorted it out.
Generally the tent is fine, it wasn't expensive and works perfectly for us and two small children. Plenty of room to sleep, and the blackout bedroom really is fantastic. Lets them go to sleep early and wake up late, and does seem quite warm at night.
It takes us about 20 minutes to put it up slowly and get moved into it, the same taking it down.
We have bought the extension, which we have yet to try out, but that should give us much more room, probably making us use the tent for longer trips, and the awning with the van for weekend trips.
Condensation can be an issue, but we try to air out the tent on the day we leave and don't pack it until it is dry.
It has survived some downpours and wind OK, although I would prefer a little porch to keep the inside dry when going in and out.
All in all, it suits our needs and seems to stand up to the weather OK.

Myself and husband have just bought this tent. We have not stayed in it yet but have put it up on the back garden. As there is only 2 of us it is plenty big enough for us and has a large airy and comfortable feel to the inside. Thank you Richard so much for your thorough review and assessment of this tent as and can concur that when we put it up some of the poles seemed a bit tight. As we have never been camping before or owned a tent I am so glad I came across your review as we can learn from it and make some amendments before we go. With not having had a tent before the tightness issue could have been thought of that that was how it was supposed to be, especially to newcomers to this area. I also feel Coleman should have rectified these issues before production! We did go inside one in the shop and although we hadn,t put it up ourselves as you had it did look and feel perfect for our needs. The deal clincher was the black out bedrooms which I would not have believed myself to the degree that they worked to such an extent that they are better than black out blinds in a bedroom! Upon closing them in the shop it was pitch black and with bright super lights (Go outdoors) thought it was amazing. I will miss a little of the morning sunlight as a lot of people sure will but the trade off for a good nights sleep won the case. After we have been away I will write another review to see if in my opinion it warrants less or more stars. At the time of purchase we did buy the inner carpet and front extension which did seem to add quite a lot of extra space at the front. Also thanks for the comment about condensation during the night, I will add a couple of small dehumidifier to see if that wicks some of the condensation away, if any can get in between two inflatable queen sized beds! (Yes we measured it). Napping Camping and Good luck to all who bought/buy the Mosedale and let's hope we don't encounter too many problems!

I have very mixed feelings about my Coleman Mosedale 5. We bought it for £253, which is not that much to pay for a spacious 5 man tent, but it has not been without its problems, which I shall come to later. This review comes after a week of camping in April 2018 (several sites and a variety of weather conditions).
DESIGN
As you can see from the photos, it is basically a budget 3 hoop tunnel tent, with subdivided sleeping across the rear, and doors at the front and side. What makes this tent different is that it has a blackout bedroom, a speciality of Colemans, and it really does work! Some people may not like this, but it is like entering a cosy cave, and if you have children who wake up at the crack of dawn on those summer mornings, this may well be for you – very little natural light enters when you do up the zip.
Other design features of note are:
- Fully sewn in groundsheet
- A strategic bend in the poles, to increase headroom at the sides.
- Mosquito nets to both doors (an important feature for Scottish midges), and several vents
- Zip stops on the doors, so you can always find where to open them (in an emergency).
- Zipped entry for electric hookup (This is a bit tight for a 16A socket, but is big enough – just).
- Storage pockets on the inside and the outside of the bedroom compartment.
- The bedroom compartment can be left attached when packing up (I like this).
PITCHING
Pitching is relatively easy; the worst part as always with fibreglass poles is threading them through the sleeves – the metal collars tend to catch. My tip is to always push the poles; never pull (otherwise they come apart). It is possible to put the tent up single handed, but it is certainly easier with two.
The short wire pegs supplied with the tent are hardly worth the bother – get some “nine inch nail” type pegs and a small claw hammer. There are a lot of guying points at the rear, but not so many at the front; in particular, none to the front corner. Bear this in mind when pitching on an exposed site.
It is possible to guy out either of the two doors - there are holes provided for “king posts”, but I just guyed out the front door without posts to let a bit of air in whilst providing shelter – if king posts are used the door would interfere with the centre front guyline (easily temporarily removed, I suppose).
IN USE
During our trip we experienced strong gusting winds, which the tent stood up to well enough (although it did shake about quite a bit), and a night of heavy rain; not a drop came in!
As mentioned earlier, the blackout bedroom really works (but I do miss that nice warm glow you get when you wake up inside a canvas Force Ten). Some condensation does form on the inside of the bedroom door – not a big issue, but not nice on a bare back first thing in the morning! There is a removable bedroom divider that splits the bedroom 3:2, which is ideal for 2 adults and 2 children.
The roll up curtains for the four little windows at the front corners of the tent are a bit of a fiddle; the main window and the mosquito net doors are fine.
Dismantling and packing up is easy; the bedroom inner can be left attached, and the bag is big enough to take the tent and poles once you get the knack of rolling it up (fold in half, and then into 3; then roll up from the rear).
PROBLEMS
The biggest issue by far was that the front pole in particular appeared to be too long for the tent – a LOT of force was needed to get the pole onto its alloy retaining pin at the base of the tent, even with the adjustment strap fully extended. So much force in fact that I bent one of the retaining pins (the supplier gave me a small partial refund so that I could buy some spares – steel pins this time). As the straps were fully extended, there was quite a gap beneath the flysheet on that side. The biggest concern though is that damage will occur to the tent because the pole is under such pressure, and the tent fabric is under such tension – the front door zips I felt were particularly vulnerable when they were being closed at the top. The middle pole was also very tight, although not quite as bad as the front pole. The rear pole appeared to be fine.
I contacted Coleman directly by email, explaining the problem in detail and asked them for advice about shortening the poles. Returning the tent was not a desirable option due to my remote location. They agreed that this was the most practical option so I went ahead; shortening the 2 front poles by 4cm (2cm each side). This job turned out to be quite straight forward once I had thought it through (see my Coledale Mosedale 5 problems thread for more details of how I did this).
The tent pitches much more easily with the shortened poles, and I am happy with the outcome, but I feel that I should not have had to do this to a new tent!
Other problems include :
- One of the metal pole collars came loose and started sliding up the pole that it was meant to be attached to. The dimples in the collar that are meant to prevent the collar sliding up were not deep enough – easily deepened with a hammer and nail, but this is a potentially serious fault that could have resulted in pole failure; luckily I spotted it in time.
- The centre front guy line knot turned itself into a slip not, preventing insertion of the pole into the sleeve. I re-tied all of the major guy lines as figure of eight loops.
- The tent pegs provided are inadequate for a tent of this size, in my opinion.
- The front corner attachment points for the bedroom inner are starting to fail where they join the groundsheet.
SUMMARY
After resolving the problems with the poles I am now content with what is after all a budget family tent, but the problems with the pole length and the collars are serious and cannot be overlooked. Therefore I cannot recommend this tent, and can only give it a rating of 6 (this would have been an 8 without the pole issues).

I bought this tent 5 weeks ago. I have only used this tent for 5 nights so this review is first impressions. It took about 25 minutes to build. Tent is very stable. The bedroom inside is fantastic, dark and very large. Living area is bright and pleasant to be in.
I will be very pleased if anyone can recommend a suitable front extension for this tent. One minus is that it's very difficult to find accessories for this tent.
