5 Reviews of the Rock Springs 4

This is an updated review to potentially help other users.
Given the short ring and pin webbing straps and the tension issue we made the following easy modification, which has reduced the tension and hopefully lengthened the life of the tent. The ring and pin fittings come with one of the pins trapped within the webbing strap on the tent side of the ring. The rings are split rings, so we unthreaded each split ring and released the trapped pin (so it now sits loose on the split ring) before rethreading the split ring on the webbing strap. This has reduced the tension considerably (by several cm per pole) while still keeping the flysheet nicely stretched. For added confidence we also added a patch of tenacious tape on the inside of the stitching to add reinforcing.

I bought this tent for festival camping and for two people it provided more than enough space for airbeds and bags / rucksacks. It is easy to pitch and feels very sturdy. Is light and airy inside although is not standing height. Plenty of room in the porch area for camping gear and boots etc.
However, on our 3rd pitch the ring and pin at the base of the flysheet ripped away and made a large hole in the tent. This problem has been highlighted by other posts - ? too much stress on the structure caused by overly short webbing straps. It was really disappointing as I liked the tent a lot.

We use the Rock Springs 4 as an overnight tent to add flexibility to a longer holiday. It does an excellent job for 3 - lightweight and small pack-size but also water-tight and quick to pitch. Fits a Coleman Comfort double and single airbed in the inner tent and has the 2 porches for sitting and storage. The main porch groundsheet is sewn onto the flysheet making it easier to pitch and the porch more weather tight. We use a 4m x 3m Vango PE groundsheet under the tent as a footprint (folded under to shape), which adds protection and a groundsheet for the second porch. We also combine with the Vango Adventure Tarp in the rain to provide additional shelter for cooking and relaxing.
The rear entrance is a great idea, extending out the flysheet without adding the weight of an extra pole. Opening it up provides great airflow through the tent and a second exit.
We've added a light hanging point to the roof of the inner tent and are planning to hang flymesh over the rear door of the inner tent. These little touches, along with covers over the front windows, would have been nice inclusions in the original design. For £60 its a good, not so small, tent for our purpose. I would like more substantial materials and space for more intense use, but for occasional one night stop-overs its a good buy.

I bought this tent last June for a camping trip around Cornwall and Devon for two weeks with my girlfriend.
It was put up and taken down more times than I care to mention!, however I can honestly say all in all it's a good tent and a doddle to put up with your nearest and dearest. No arguments! As the previous review suggests, it does let itself down, or rather Coleman do, in that the webbing straps do stress. And unfortunately pulled the stitching causing a wee leak! I say 'wee' because it really wasn't that bad and most of the water trickled on to the soil under the tub groundsheet of the inner. By the time we noticed in the morning the storm had passed! We continued to use the tent, plus pulled stitching for one week without distress.
Considering it can really chuck it down in Cornwall, the tent has good waterproofing and is sturdy. Just close the top vents in a storm with side rain as it can get in if persistent enough! As the previous review states, the two exits are a bonus (the back compartment great for storing food and beer!) and I think there's sufficient room for 4. Or more than plenty for two.Plus clothes, food, chairs, cool box. Erm beer!
On our return I contacted Coleman as the tent has two years warranty. I had to pay (inconveniently) for postage to send the tent for repairs (£5 minus poles and pegs), but it was returned to me at Coleman's expense within 14 days. I know this may put a lot of people off, but I'm looking forward to using my tent again and have no concerns about its reliability in the future.Hey, it happens. Even when you buy a tent for £80? I'll keep you posted on its performance next camping marathon!

I bought this tent earlier in the year to take away with Beaver Scouts, and it has served me well so far. I have used it several times, and found it very easy to put up/down by myself.
Coleman recommend flysheet first pitching but you can get away with leaving the inner in, and it still rolls away nicely and pitches well.
It would be VERY cosy for 4 people I think, but for me and my two tweens it does nicely for a weekend, although longer than a couple of nights and it would definitely need to be bigger. For me on my own, it's lovely and roomy, plenty of room for my gear as well. In fact, as far as storage goes, the covered-in porch with sewn-in groundsheet comes in very handy, as does the second exit from the back of the bedroom to avoid tramping on all the clutter!
It's a little short on headroom (no pun intended!), difficult to stand up in but it's a small price to pay for the space offered and the ease of use, not to mention the relatively small size and weight when packed. The awning is also low when put up but nice to sit under in the evening, and the poles are included, which is an added bonus - no extra bits to pack.
My main criticism is the one which has been noted by reviewers on other websites, and I feel it may be one worth paying attention to if you want this tent to last any length of time - the nylon webbing straps which pin the tent down are VERY short (5/6mm maybe) compared to other tents I've had, which puts quite a bit of stress on these points when the tent is pitched, especially if the weather gets a bit blowy. I wouldn't use this tent anyway if I was expecting strong winds, but even moderately blowy conditions made me check the straps very carefully on a regular basis. If anything lets this tent down in the camping trips to come, it will probably be the poor design here, surprising really for a Coleman I feel.
Overall though, a good tent and well worth the money (I paid £60 inc. Delivery) and even if it only does me a couple of years, I will be very pleased.
