3 Reviews of the Watergate 6

Bought to replace a Robens Double Dreamer as this was no longer practical (two teenage children NOT wanting to share a room!). Excellent price,at a smidge under £300 - with the canopy, loads of space in the bedrooms and the 'living room' and the canopy made an excellent kitchen :)
All in all, very happy with this tent as it's also light (we backpack, so weight is crucial!) and withstood some serious rain for two days solid. Check out our in-depth review via our website.

We bought this tent as we like a LOT of space when we camp. We replaced the Aztec Sala 8 which we had the pleasure of using often over nearly ten years; a fab tent and very sorely missed.
The Watergate 6 ticked a lot of boxes such as offering space, light and being airy. The central roof panel is made of a light material which even on dull days gives the impression of being bright. Easy enough to pitch although dodgy on a windy day and easier with two assembling it. The pins could be difficult to put in the ends of the poles.
Unfortunately we are looking to replace it after just one year; one of the reasons being because several poles have broken on numerous occasions including the porch pole.
The porch itself flaps quite a bit in windy weather, which can keep you awake at night.
The other main reason for replacing this tent is that it leaks. The material seems fine which you would expect from a 4ooomm hydrostatic head but after a much investigation/outings the water was coming in through the seams. Not just in one place either but throughout the tent. Being able to keep dry was becoming a joke as water was dripping in from everywhere. In the beginning we did wonder if this was due to condensation but to be honest we couldn't ventilate the tent anymore than we possibly were.
Sad to say goodbye after such a short time as we have had lots of fun in this tent but it just wasn't up to standard.

Simply a great tent. Bought to replace a Vango Icarus 500 to accomodate an expanding family (2 adults, 2 children), this wasn't on our list, but seeing one erected at DW Camping, Chichester (very helpful, knowledgeable and recommended), it seemed a £279 bargain for the size. The price includes 2 steel poles to hold the door as a canopy.
The pack size is relatively compact, about a third bigger and 10kg heavier than the I500. We bought the additional carpet and footprint each the size of a large briefcase.
Erecting was simple, the 5 poles were under relatively low tension and easy to tie in, 2 are colour coded being slightly shorter. It was our first attempt but getting the structure up took about 20 minutes, and pegging out the many guys took about another hour. Next time, the guy ropes will be adjusted so I'm guessing 40 minutes or so for 2 people or an hour for 1 (having only been camping once in the past decade). Fitting the interior rooms took another 10 minutes.
Once up the tent felt very sturdy, we had great weather and only a couple of downpours but it felt watertight, I'd be confident of the tent even in bad weather. The central section is pretty spacious, and could easily fit tables and chairs, headroom wasn't bad, with room to stand in most areas (I'm 5ft 9in). The two adjacent bedroom were large enough for a double airbed, with space all round though we used one for a travel cot. The third bedroom is smaller and would leave little room beyond a double mattress. It also seemed shorter, with my feet poking under the separator into the 'utility' which we used as a wardrobe. Plenty of storage pockets, with two long hangars in the central compartment and large pockets at the foot of each bedroom. The tent feels reasonably airy with light roof panel in the central section and 2 large windows.
Access is through two doors either side, both which have fly nets, and 8 inch high step to get over. Electrical hook up is through either side. The tent is asymmetrical, only one side has a rain cover for the door, same side as a half mesh window.
Packing was easy, taking about 45 minutes, though we have rehung at home to ensure any condensation was lost.
Overall, this was a great tent and we are happy with the purchase. There is perhaps a drop in quality from the i500, the material feels thinner, the accessory carpet was not difficult to snag, and colour coding of shorter poles was by cheap tape but in reality I'm not sure there was a real difference. Considering what you get for your money this is an excellent buy, well made, good features and a compact pack. We didn't buy the canopy but may consider this for next year.
