1 Reviews of the Vrolie 180
By: Ernst ger Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2011 Rating:
We were in search of a smaller canvas tent as a weekender because our “Gerjak Zeeraket” and the “Erdman-Schmidt Gazelle” (dutch canvas pyramids) are both too heavy and need much more time to pitch.
We did the usual journey on the net and visited Esvo’s tent show in Volendam-Holland on holyday in October 2011. There we inspected the Vrolie 180 and it’s successor the Orka 180.
Despite their little difference in height (Orka + 10 cm) they were nearly identical. Both are ridge tents 1.8 meters wide, with an ascending roof, large enough for 2, bit of a squeeze for 3. The fixed groundsheet is made from a thick ripstop PVC material, roof and side substantial canvas and made in Holland – not in a far eastern sweatshop.
In August I’ve found a Vrolie 180 (used once) on marktplaats.Nl for 150 €Euro including shipping to Germany.
The first pitch was in the garden that only took 15 minutes. Simply fix the groundsheet with 8 pegs to the ground, put the tentpoles in and fix the 14 tent leashes - that’s all. To create a dry front area we mounted a 3x 3m Quetchua tarp that took another 10 minutes.
Last weekend we travelled to Camping De Loeks near Enschede/Nl a beautiful farm campsite approx. 150 km from our home to have a little time out before the weather gets worse.
It nearly went as we had hoped. Pitching was quick and easy – while it rained - an unexpected test for nose and equipment. The next day the sun appeared and we were dry and happy. The tent has proved totally watertight and very stable in the winds. As expected, there was no condensation at walls and roof.
As a single roof tent the Vrolie has more space inside. The roof height increases from the rear (120 cm) forward at 160 cm. Sideways and on the back we found enough space for luggage.
The quality of the materials and workmanship is very good. All the corners of the tent and the fixing points of the ropes and tentpoles are reinforced. A nice extra is a ventilation in the front door that can be closed from inside.
A great little tent – ideal for a couple (of days) out in the green …
