1 Reviews of the Boston 600A Awning
By: Willz115 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2015 Rating:
Myself and my partner purchased a Boston 600a + Awning and Carpet for £400ish.
When we got the tent home to 'practice erect' all of the plastic windows seemed to be stuck together and really crumpled and creased. This seemed a concern to us as we own the Boston 400 (2010 model) and the windows didn’t stick like this. The tent successfully erected between the two of us and packed away in the bag 2nd time! Only problem is, we noticed a hole/tear in the footprint and returned the tent for an instant replacement.
New tent, awning, carpet, me and the Mrs went for our 1st weekend away in the new tent. It was early evening and quite cool. The windows seemed more creased and moving them sounds like squashing an empty coke bottle. That night we had 2 holes in the awning windows simply by touching them, they were so brittle when cold. We returned the awning, but none in stock so we had a repair carried out by Scottish mountain gear. The repair was excellent and the new plastic window is perfect.
Weekend 2, same thing happened, setup in cool conditions, that night touched the windows and they simply crack. Tent is now back with the retailer awaiting reply from Outwell. The same retailer has had 'a few' returned for the same issue of poor window plastic fabric!
Now for the pros, the tent is VERY spacious and fairly simple to erect. The side porch is great to have as you can leave your muddy shoes/walking boots in this area. Front door is now zipped at the bottom (to the groundsheet) to stop the wind coming through but we found that it stops the dogs getting out! There is no zipped mesh on the front door unfortunately but a large window. All windows have curtains attached at the bottom that can be velcroed up in place. Carpet is not the best but does really keep the place a little warmer and a luxury feel. The carpet does move quite a bit as it seems a little slippery underneath on the groundsheet. There is a lamp hook fixed to the ceiling to you can hang a light up and a couple of Velcro ties to fix the cable down the side which leads to the ehu entry point the same side. The inner sleeping compartment (removable) only just fit and the toggles seemed to only just fit under extreme tension which makes me think that the elastic will stretch over time. Sleeping compartment can be left open to 6 persons with 2 entry zipped doors (with mesh too) or a divider can be dropped down the middle to have 3 and 3. The front of the sleeping compartment has good storage pockets on the front to store lots of items which is good. When opening or closing the doors on the sleeping area, sometimes you have to use your other hand to hold the fabric as well because the inner is not evenly tensioned around.
The awning is great too. The groundsheet is not sewn in, but still is very spacious. It can be a little fiddly putting this part on as there are no instructions on erecting this part BUT with a little common sense, it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of guy ropes around the tent and withstands a reasonable amount of wind and hardly moving. The awning is designed to have a sloping front door. We have never been a fan of this design as you have to reach out in front of you to get to the zip to get out and coming back in, if it’s raining, you get lots of water inside. They could have adopted the upright door like the tent has and would have been much more beneficial. We have never had any leaks with the Boston range (apart from the faulty windows) and are generally good tents.
Overall conclusion, yes we are annoyed that we are a victim of defective materials, multiple trips to the local caravan and camping retailer worried that with the so many defects the retailer may start putting the blame on us (they haven’t yet). Putting my personal issues to the side, Easycamp are good tents, they offer higher spec tents and you do get a lot for your money, albeit they do seem to be a little rough round the edges with wiggly stitching lines, bits of material and thread stuck in the Velcro and tent compartment. They really are a good tent. When you accept it for not being top of the range, I think you will enjoy it more!
