3 Reviews of the Eclipse 500
By: Skykathfly Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2015 Rating:
I am so conflicted about this tent.
I love the space, layout, height and weight but the quality is not good.
Space is perfect for two adults + stuff for a comfortable holiday tent.
I had a previous easycamp tent bought for £50 that lasted 8 years wit no issues before finally giving up the ghost in prolonged atrocious stormy weather.
Purchased the Eclipse 500 as a replacement in August 2015.
Initial quality issues out of the bag:
- The sleeping pod doesn't actually fit on properly on the outer. It is too tight, this means it strains and is pulling at the seams and zip.
- The tension band under the tent for the porch pole is too short.
- Impossible to get the porch pegged taught, the side bits are always flappy
After two weekends use in Aug 15:
- The porch pole broke in wind
- The eyelet for the pole to sit into came out on one of the tabs
- Almost all of the elastic peg loops perished by the second weekend. Was very odd.
- Rips in the pole sleeve
To be fair I did only pay £80, and after the initial significant decline the tent hasn't got any worse over the last 3 years and I still use it.
Water drips in the porch are a bit I think that is because when I made my new porch pole it isn't quite the correct fit.
Love:
- Standing height
- Lovely large sleeping pod for two people + luggage
- Big porch for sitting or storing bikes at a push
- Nice big windows in pooch
- Weight is low (for size of tent)
- Packed size is small (for size of tent)
Hate:
- Quality
- No fly mesh on the inner sleeping pod door (my old easycamp of similar design did have this)
In summary - I wold love to have this exact same tent, but with a fly mesh on the sleeping pod door, and twice the quality. And I would pay twice the price!

I was actually quite disappointed with this tent which was surprising as most of the reviews I read before buying were positive. The most annoying thing about it was the zip to the inner tent. Unlike every other tent I have ever owned this was a single zip which zipped from the bottom to the top. This means if you want to reach out of the inner tent to get something from the outer you have to get out of your sleeping bag, stand up and unzip the zip all the way round before you can reach out. A double zip would have meant you could unzip a few centimetres from the bottom and reach through whilst still in your sleeping bag. I thought that this was a mistake so I contacted easycamp to complain but was told it was supposed to be like that to save on production costs !. I've used my tent once, for just 3 nights but it is already showing signs of wear. The elastic that you peg down the outer tent through has broken up inside its sleeve so that it is no longer stretchy. Three of the plastic rings that you suspend the inner tent from have broken so you have to put the toggle through the loop the plastic ring used to be connected to instead of the ring itself. On the plus side it rained while we were away and everything inside stayed nice and dry and it was easy to assemble and take down. Overall though the build quality lets it down. I mean, how much money must they have saved on production by using a single zip. Probably just a few pence but that few pence means a massive inconvenience to users. If I had realised the zip was like this I wouldn't have bought it.

We found this tent to small for 4 well ok for wife and me. Was most happy that it kept the wet out, but we need to buy a larger one for next year. Did have to go and buy a other tent for our 2 sons to sleep as it just was to small for 4 persons. There is ample head room. Was easy to put up and down. As we are new to camping this year we were a bit upset on its size but you learn by your mistakes
