3 Reviews of the Eureka Grand BTC

By: Silvercamp pod  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2011   Rating:

We had our annual pilgrimage to the local tent show and saw a couple of tents (Habitat BTC and The Grand BTC) by the manufacturer Eureka which we were really impressed with, but we weren't really looking to buy. After researching the brand on the internet, we found this tent. It's an earlier model, but it was also discounted making it much more of a bargain. We also thought the layout would suit us better than the current range, so went ahead and bought it from Cactus Fishing supplies.

We had a test pitch in the garden and then used the tent for a 9 night holiday. We had a few days of rain, and the first few days were cold at night (5-6 degrees) but it was mainly sunny. We are 2 adults and 3 children, tend to pack reasonably light, and camp for 1 night- 3 weeks (often changing sites if it is a longer holiday).

The tent is easy to pitch, having done it a few times we think you could manage with one person using the 'poles in and guy' technique but the job is easier with two. The groundsheet, bedroom and dividing inner can be left in or taken out- it's useful to have these options in case of wet strike or to pack the tent to suit you car.

The groundsheet is mainly ZIP. It is described as a footprint, hence we didn't purchase one at first thinking it was an extra groundsheet and not needed but it is the actual groundsheet to cover the living space and to go under the bedroom area.

The bedrooms are a good size without being enormous and more likely to get cold. There are 2 equal sized pods, The children shared one and we the other. There is the option to make this into 1 bigger pod. The storage just outside the bedrooms is good.

We liked the 2 rooms in the living area. We used the one nearer to the bedrooms for storage and as a porch area. The main one had our chairs, table and kitchen equipment. The divider means that it is easier to get cosy in the evenings, and it was very cold for the first few nights we went. Having the divider up also offers a bit more privacy, but it is easily removed if you want a bigger living room area. I love the curved shape of the door! The headroom and usuable room of the tent is very good.

The tent offers a lot of excellent ventilation through zip down windows, which are mainly fine net but also some plastic. I can see with the previous reviewer that having velcro for half positions would be useful- we tucked them half way but this means in rain water could ingress and be on inside material rather than the outside material. We will also put some eyelets in the side doors to use tarp poles with- make this into a little porch.

We have the power cables supplied with the tent but no power pack, and this is now unavailable. I think most leisure batteries will do the job. We will look at getting one eventually as I think the power would be useful. We are also considering getting the side porch available for this tent, as we plan to keep the tent for a long time. The tent was plenty big enough for all our stuff but having shade and the option to cook more outside would be a positive.

This is our first cotton tent (there is also a polycotton version available) so we were a little wary. But the feel is lovely and it was definitely cooler on the warmer days. We moved sites halfway through our trip and had to strike on a wet day, although the tent was heavier we managed and after re-pitching it, it soon dried out nicely.

We are very pleased with our purchase and thrilled to have moved over to cotton!

We have used the tent twice in anger now. With the weather we've had this year both trips were wet.

We stayed warm and dry throughout.

The design of tent suits us perfectly. We use the bedroom as one, we have a double camp bed and an elderly German Shepherd so there is room for our clothes bag and laundry in the bed room also.

The small living area is big enough for the dog's holdall and a table with the kitchen boxes on top, and a box of everything else underneath. There are also storage pockets on the wall to the bedroom.

The huge porch area is great and contains, the camp kitchen, the 3way fridge, 12volt battery pack, the dog bed (during the day) and our chairs.

I have a few modifications to carry out next time we go away.

The diving curtain in the bedroom will be removed.

The front window covers will have some stick and sew velcro applied to keep them against the plastic part when partially open.

Some eyelets will be attached to the bottom of the side doors to enable pegging down.

Hubby will be taking some electrical connectors to enhance the switching positions and hence the usability of the 12v system. I have bought a Kampa Sabre 150 so we will be lit up like a lighthouse.

We have already bought some heavy tarpaulin material to use as a footprint and we leave the zip in 'footprint' attached, this has speeded up pitching to 20 mins.

As is always the case with wind-shedding designs, there is a tendency for the front door to drip water in when entering/exiting. I have a couple of turtle mats to use as doormats and this seems to be working.

Eureka make a front annex for our tent which zips to the front pole, so I may convert an old Coleman Classic Awning to do the same.

Overall we are very pleased with our eBay bargain and expect to camp in it for many years.

Just completed a test pitch of my eBay bargain. I paid £450 for this unused, unopened tent.

Easy to erect (tunnel design).

Polycotton with loads of ventilation.

Large bedroom (with dividing curtain that I shall probably remove).

Zip in footprint included in sale, as was the power pack to power 3 x 12v sockets in the tent.

Will write a full review after our first trip.
