1 Reviews of the Geertop Plume 2 Bivy

By: Caligula  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2013   Rating:

This is a rip stop”nylon” one man hooped bivvi.

It follows largely, a common design of 2 hoops forming a rigid head end with a large midge net and vent, but also has another hoop over the foot end, keeping the fly off the occupants limbs, and more importantly allowing better ventilation through this area with a midge net covered vent at the feet, thereby lessening the potential for condensation compared to some others like the Snugpak Stratosphere (review on this site) or the Alpkit Elan.

To take this a bit further, this bivvi is a bit taller all round, with the fly a bit further away from the face, compared to some (most if not all) hooped bivvis, again going someway to reducing, if not eliminating the issue of condensation, an issue for all of these types of bivvis. You have a bit more headroom. Plenty enough to read or whatever.

The best in this respect (eliminating condensation or with best ventilation), which is closer to a crossover 1 man tent/bivvi is Snugpak’s Ionosphere. But that is a different design (review on this site).

The quality, bearing in mind that this would be a budget priced bivvi (available at time of writing for £90 RRP or less (Stratosphere listed at £204 as a comparison), is perfectly good although the groundsheet seems a little light. The Hydrostatic Head is given(on site and reviews) as a healthy 5000mm (on the bag it is given as 10000mm, which is preposterous) and it is all seam sealed

Having a long side entrance and full fly mesh eases access, and the zips work well and are 2 way. Again the full mesh aids ventilation.

There are 2 storage pockets in the head end, and an elastic strap across the groundsheet to help secure any sleeping pad.

Set up is incredibly quick with only 4 pegs needed as a minimum, and the pegs, hex cross section alloy shepherds crook type, are more than adequate. The bags it packs in is rubbish, and makes the pack too big. Packing the poles separately resolves this. And I'm going to use a different cheap small dry bag for stuffing the bivvi therein.

As soon as I've had this out in the rain, I will update, but it seems a sound (all seams taped) well designed bivvi. Better designed than the likes of the Elan and Stratosphere, and half the price at least, but not half the quality.
