7 Reviews of the Cabana 4
By: Redriot46fa Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2012 Rating:
I have just bought a cabana 4 and it is awesome. Looks great and very easy to erect - as a lone female camper this is essential. It has loads of air vents and a sewn in groundsheet. The groundsheet does not seem very robust, which is why I have given it 9/10. The plastic cap on the base of the main pole also snapped on first erection, but this was repaired with glue and tape. A great looking tent with plenty of room. Ideal for casual campers like me :)

We bought the Gelert Cabana Liberty Rock last summer as we wanted something quick and easy to pitch. This certainly does the trick, we can pitch this tent in about 10 minutes!
And its as easy to take down too. Perfect for weekend trips with the kids! We took 2 adults and 2 kids and there was ample space both for relaxing and sleeping. We love this tent and would deffo recommend it! Only down side is that for some reason, we ended up with condensation, we had no rain whatsoever but when we woke in the morning and came out of sleeping pods we did get dripped on a little. Not overly sure why this happens, but it did! Anyway not a huge problem! Plenty of storage space inside and the kids loved it too! We got lots of comments (all good)! Can't wait to start using it again this year once the sun hits!

We bought this tent (Wave Dimension design) as a quick pitch one or two nighter. Having just returned from a weekend camping we found this tent to fulfill our quick getaway needs. It took all of about 20 minutes to be fully pitched. The only minor point is that it doesn't have an EHU entry point. We used the door to feed our cable into the tent. We were extremely lucky in that the weather was exceptionally warm and the ventilation of this tent was a godsend - but I can imagine that in the colder months this tent may be a bit airy! We like the walk in feel of this tent and indeed the two corners of the set in door were ideal for storing your kit out of the way. I think this tent would be a bit of a tight squeeze for four but is ideally suited for two. There was plenty of room inside for 2 large chairs and a table with room to move around. We had various comments all positive I may add on the look of this tepee tent. I can see us having many a summer night camping in this tent.

I own 3 other tents, 2 for use with car, 1 small one for motorcycle rallies, but as too ancient for laying down to dress wanted one to be able to stand up inside!
Red/grey cabana totally fits the bill as small/light enough to carry on solo bike, easy one person erect/strike, quickest of all I have ever owned.
Last camp early in April rained/hailed all night, VERY windy so downside was flapping noises from large areas of tent, upside was tent dry enough to pack half hour after rain stopped as steep sides and flapping left tent dry.
Love vertical door inset so no water gets inside when opening, but door not overlapping enough at base which small length of velcro fails to keep fully closed, thus some hail bounced up inside, hopefully the only time!
All in all a great product which gets enviable looks and comments everywhere, particularly in Germany where a timed race to break camp between 5 various campers saw me the easy winner.
One comment heard from passing group
'Squire! ready my steed', it does look as if belongs at a jousting tournament.
It will be in Devon next week, Holland in a months time, can't wait.

Beddgelert, a name that conjures up the rugged and beautiful landscape of Wales and the sad tale of the famous, faithful dog, Gelert.
Hence the name of the camping manufacturer founded in Beddgelert some 35 years ago. It is with confidence that I acquire their products
Knowing that if anyone knows a thing or two about what is needed to comfortably survive a harsh camping environment it would be a company from Snowdonia.
So it was little surprise that upon receipt of my latest Gelert product, the Cabana 4 tipi tent, that I saw on the box that it was indeed manufactured in China.
A sad reminder of the times.
On opening the box I was however impressed with the bag that contained the 11.9 kg contents. I must say that it is very good quality canvas, in fact of all the tents I own or have previously owned it is as sturdy as any.
The bag contained
Main tent Bedroom pod Bedroom divider curtain Main pole 2 doorway poles Pegs Webbing strap Emergency repair kit.
The cabana 4 comes in 3 colour combinations, wild dove/grey (never seen one for sale though) Mars red/charcoal and liberty rock. The liberty rock is most popular with the ladies, a mixture of purple and flowers. Very easy on the eye. The one I am reviewing is the mars red version. Testosterone and shades seem appropriate by comparison
Pitching
The cabana 4 is a modern take on a very old theme, the tipi. The significant difference is that it is square based, has an stylish doorway design and a sown in groundsheet (sig) Rightly so Gelert have billed this as a festival tent where it would be in its' most suitable environment I am sure. Though it could easily, (because of the striking pattern) seem not out of place as some kind of circus accommodation.
The Review.
Location The peak District September 4th to 7th. 2011
When writing this review a couple of things need to be taken into account. Firstly this tent was a gift from very good friends so I am naturally keen to write a positive teview. Secondly this is a summer tent and was tested in severe gales as many can attest too camping on these dates.
Pitching is very easy, a simple case of pegging the four corners, inserting the center pole and guying the two door poles then finish pegging out.
Attaching the bedroom pod is by a series of hooks and rings, also an easy job. It is important though to thread the 'hoist strap' through the D rings in the centre pole before lifting into place. This simply facilitates hauling the peak of the bedroom up.
The poles are steel and quite robust. The pegs are superior to the usual pegs issued with new tents made of monkey metal that bend at soon as they part the grass.
These pegs are a lot stronger. The guys are reflective and also quite strong.
The tent now stood on a quite pleasant afternoon drawing enquiring glances from other campers who were no doubt forming their own opinion of such a garish tent.
In the night the weather started to turn foul and it soon became apparent that it was inadequately guyed. All pegs where hammered flush with the ground and guy lines equally and firmly tensioned.
Though the poles stayed firm the walls had far too much play. This resulted in excessive tent noise and rapid air movement within the tent. The vents that run along the bottom of the tent must provide welcome relief in the height of summer
But in strong cold winds make the inside quite uncomfortable. I would say that it is the second most draughty tent I have ever been in. The first was one I made in the garden with a length of string and one of my mothers best bedsheets when I was 8. During the night the wind and rain increased to a full gale. The side walls flexed so much in and out that a cooker stand was knocked over. I would estimate around half a metre yhat the walls travel in and out on each side of the tent.
The next morning I ventured out, checked the guys etc, I looked around to see how other tents were fairing. Two Coleman Bedrocks, slender noses pointing into the wind rippled. A Vango Zeta jiggled playfully next to a Cabanon that stood stoically defiant as immune and unmovable as a galapagos turtle having a nap. Mine? Side walls in and out like demented bellows in striped pyjamas. The rear wall concave like a sail on the Solent, pressing hard against the inner, then releasing with a crack as the wind paused briefly.
Upon further inspection the door pole pushes through a gromit in a strap that is attached to the tent and is then guyed down. The stitching was coming apart. Eventually this parted altogether resulting in a door pole on the floor and a very saggy tent. This to my mind is a very bad design. Not having an overlocker handy or even a needle and thread the only solution was to go back to basics.
I poked the spike on the pole through the hole made when the stitching gave, capped it with the broken webbing gromit and pegged it down. This took the pole from outside to yhe inside of the tent where it should be in the first place. Listen Gelert. Foot, pole, spike through gromit in tent, guy line, raincap, The poles outside is being a little too clever.
Waterproofing of this tent is rated at 3000HH, I believe them, the rain rolled down the walls in sheets it was so heavy.Only one minor seam leak, easily rectified. Great stuff.
Conclusion, For summer use only where winds are not likely to exceed 20mph. Great, otherwise take something else. I name all my tents, my Gelert Stratus is Mersey (it's a tunnel) Force ten classic was jaffa (obviously) my little dome is Tubby, I hereby name my Cabana 4 Fairweather.

I too have the Liberty Rock - bough because I fell in love with it. I used it for three nights, there was myself, two kids and a medium sized dog.
We used the bedroom section as one, and there was plenty of room, even if my husband joined us, we still would not be squashed.
The living area was fine for when it got chilly of an evening - I had a chair, cupboard, portaloo and bags in there, and we still had room to move around.
The tent was very easy to pitch single handed. I hadn't pitched before , although OH had done a test pitch - with much huffing and puffing. He had detached the bedroom section when taking it down but it it was logical how to leave this attached to the main tent, and clip/unclip from the central pole.
We did have some rain, but nothing to really test the tent.
I think that the high design and vents on the tent meant that there was no condensation to speak of - something that I have found can be a problem with synthetic tents.
Definitely and ideal tent for when I take the kids on a short break.
It is an eyecatching tent that stands out - apparently one little girl was most upset because we had a 'princess tent' and they didn't.

I bought this tent in Liberty Rock, a purple floral design, rather on impulse because I just fell in love with it! However, it is very practical for me as I can no longer manage the ring and pin system most tents have. It was so easy to pitch, just unroll it, peg out the corners, go inside to put up the main pole, put in the 2 door poles and peg out the elastics around the fly. It is much lighter inside than I thought, even though it has no windows and there are vents at the roof apex and at floor level. There were 3 of us in it and we had no condensation. The central pole has a strap attached which is used to 'hoist' the bedroom inner, this was the only slightly awkward part as the strap didn't run very smoothly through the D-rings on the pole. The inner also comes with a dividing curtain. The tent is surprisingly roomy and the height is lovely, even though you have to duck in through the doorway. The shape of the front, with a 'set in' door meant we could put our bags at the front and out of the way, leaving the main area free. There was me and 2 children and there was plenty of room for us. I think for a night or 2 you could squeeze in the OH too! It didn't rain while we were away, so I can't comment on how it handles bad weather. A perfect tent for me to take the kids away on my own. We love it! It is quite eye-catching, so maybe not ideal for you shy and retiring types, but it's height and colour does make it very easy to spot!
