4 Reviews of the Family Dome 4

This was the first tent we bought. It was really easy to put up- we only replaced it after we bought a dog and needed a larger living area and larger bedrooms. It is all held in a really compact holdall and is really neat and easy to transport.

Great wee tent, I've owned this from new, bought it for just me and my dog, added a tall man into the equation, things got a little more cramped, though I can stand up in the middle section. The main thing I dislike about this tent is the fact that you have to have the door fully open, so winter camping is not so cozy, though I have used this several times in the winter months. It has proved to be hardy, no bits broken or missing despite 5 years of constant use. We do also have a large frame tent for when we are a bigger party.

A great size tent. Good sized double bedrooms and plenty of space for storage and sitting. Putting the tent up is relatively easy as there are only 6 poles HOWEVER the roof poles are an absolute nightmare to get through the sleeve and I have only ever managed to get one of the roof poles in properly, the second pole dangles loose. We have had to take the rubber pieces off the end of the roof poles to even get them through the sleeve. Having said that even without it's proper structure, the tent has survived horrendous wind for week in the Lake District in 2007 and other than needing the seems sealing, I am sure will do us for many more years!

Having been used to a frame tent for years we gave up camping as everything was too cumbersome and heavy to manipulate. The Family Dome 4 brought us back to camping the moment we saw it. The fact that there was standing height, two double rooms, space in the middle for a table with chairs and it could be folded into a holdall and carried by one person made it impossible to resist.
The first time we used it was the most difficult, the poles were still new and to get the angle of curve necessary to get them through the channels was quite a struggle and we very nearly gave up, luckily this problem disappeared with use. It’s a good looking tent with a rather unusual feature – you can’t see out of the side windows as they are obscured by the bedrooms. I contacted the manufacturer who said the windows were mainly decorative, but also, as the window cover had some loops for guy ropes, they could be used to secure the tent to the ground - which seemed an odd purpose for a window. The only criticism that I have is that it is rather dark inside. It might have been an idea to put a window in the back door.
The tent has withstood the worst weather without a leak from the fabric, but beware, if you let the groundsheet protrude outside the tent then in a heavy rainfall you will get a river running through it, a lesson we learned to our cost.
There is a lot of little extras- the rooms have a mesh screen, essential in the mozzy season and fixings to hold the zippered doors and/or mesh screen secure to the side of the room when not in use. The rooms have an internal pocket to store valuables in overnight and the rooms are of a shape to give space at the base of the bed. The back door folds up to allow a through draft and also to allow some light into the tent.
It’s a great dome tent, it doesn’t look overly contrived with rooms at every corner. We have the dark green one and it blends in well on a campsite. I wouldn’t swap it!
