1 Reviews of the Navajo 10

By: Markmac  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2016   Rating:

I bought the Gelert Navajo 10 in April 2017 at a discounted price of £300 (RRP was stated at £600) ready for a Highlands and Isle of Skye camping trip in May. I originally wanted a canvas Bell Tent but was put off by the weight and the drying time (from potential downpours of good Scottish weather). I must say that I am very pleased with the Tipi style Navajo tent. At 5 meters diameter and nearly 3m tall, it is massive and very spacious, brilliant for glamping and quick and easy to pitch – I can do this on my own in around 20 minutes and pack away is also very easy. The ZIG is also a big positive – thick and durable with a good quality zip making it easy to attach/detach for cleaning.

The polycotton canvas is waterproof and breathable and the tent is comfortable inside on hot days (yes, we had hot days at the end of May north of the border). We recently went on a winter camp in the Yorkshire Dales at the end of November, which had a mixed bag of weather, wet and windy and freezing temperatures one night. The Navajo coped brilliantly in high winds and whilst the sides billowed and flapped the tent still felt secure and safe with little movement from the central pole.

The tent is not without fault though and I have a few minor niggles. I found the lower sections of the tent are difficult to tension tightly with the positioning of the guy ropes, but this could be user error/inexperience rather than the design – will keep practising. The tent is very tall, the volume of air space is massive which makes it difficult to keep warm in cold weather. I will look at a way to put a baffle/ceiling in, above head height to reduce the cubic space but still allows the tent to be ventilated. Also, will look at the possibility to fit a wood stove with a fireproof jack and flashing kit for Spring/autumn camps. If this is not possible will have to go for an electric hook up when the temperatures drop.

There are no fixing points inside for inner tents or to hang things up etc. But this is not a deal breaker and I suppose I could fashion something to hang off the sturdy central pole

My Main gripe is with the door opening in wet weather. The tent is waterproof and the flaps around the door zip do a fine job, but when you undo the zip to exit/enter the tent, there is no overhead protection and the rain comes straight in, making for a muddy and wet doorway inside the tent. I will find a way to attach a tarp/awning to give some cover the next time I use it.

I have only used the tent twice, so not had any long-term experience but think the tent will be fine – It appears to be well made ,the stitching looks good and the taped seams look to be constructed to a good standard. For the money I am very pleased, so far.
