2 Reviews of the Pop Up Double Skin 2 Man

By: RayBP  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2011   Rating:

My son bought one of these and has used it a few times. Compared with my Vango Dart200DS, the Halfords tent is more spacious as the headroom is available over a larger area. It is easy to pitch and has proved stable and waterproof in typical British summer downpours. Condensation is a problem with most modern tents in cooler weather and this one requires very careful pitching to minimise the chances of the inner contacting the outer. People familiar with pop-up tents will be aware that a definite knack is required to fold them away. This one requires frequent practice as well, being frustratingly impossible for 10 minutes, then suddenly and inexplicably co-operating. The door zip is prone to catching on the weather flap/strip.

I bought this pop-up based on the reviews and price. It was in the sale so seemed a steal at £29.99, when the RRP was £89.99.

First impressions were that it seemed well made. However, on pitching it seemed to be a bit saggy in places. I soon discovered that most of the velcro fastenings that hold the inner tent to the flysheet had not been attached, so I had to pull up all the pegs, peel back the flysheet and attach all the fastenings. So much for one-minute pitching!

Unfortunately, this did not improve the tension at all, despite my attempts to adjust the guy ropes, etc. The first morning I awoke to find it had rained in the night and discovered that at the rear of the tent the flysheet was completely resting on the inner. It was the same at the front, so when I unzipped the door I got a shower.

The next morning the weather was fine, but the weight of the condensation on the inside of the flysheet was once again enough to make it sit on the inner tent.

Basically, the double skin feature (the reason I bought it in the first place) was completely pointless. Whilst the sides remained dry, the front and rear were sopping and as an experienced camper I could tell this was not a good buy.

Needless to say, I have returned the tent to Halfords (with no problems, I might add) and will be shopping around for a double-skinned pop up that does keep me dry!
