This might be just a budget tent but I have found the quality to be superb. It has coped with one of the heaviest downpours I have seen in the UK for many years and stayed bone dry inside. It is easy to erect and well thought out with one exception for which I have deducted one star in my rating: The tent is designed to go up inner first so if you put it up in the rain the inner will get soaked. However I have worked out how to erect it fly first. I simply bought two lengths of webbing (each about 3.2 metres long) and put eyelets in the ends. These reach diagonally along the ground to hold the poles in place. I use a short piece of string (or very thin bungee cord) to tie the poles together where they cross at the top and the fly can be spread over and pegged down before the inner is hung inside. It works a treat.

Good points include:

The 'mossie' net is able to be kept closed when the other door layer is zipped open or shut from inside so flies cannot get in while you faff around. This is a failing in many more expensive tents but Hi Gear have solved it.

There is plenty of ventilation and I have not found any condensation inside.

There is a loop in the apex of the inner from which a lamp can be hung high enough that I don't bang my head on it.

I am 1.88 metres tall (6'2') and there is enough room to sleep comfortably without my head and feet pressing against the tent sides.

All in all, I am pleased with this tent and would recommend it to anyone - even in preference to some of the higher priced tents. Well done Hi Gear.

We bought this tent primarily for stop over’s and extra room for others when we take the trailer tent. My wife and I have been away a few times over the past year or so and we have found it easy to erect with only 2 poles. The only down side is that you put the inner up first, so when raining, this gets wet.

My son and I used it at Scafell last year, the weather was atrocious when we arrived in Wasdale, we put the tent up in minutes and were warm and dry all night, when we woke in the morning, there were other more expensive 2 man tents that had blown down and were just thrown away.

As the others have said, there is really only room for 2 people plus storage, the front zips up to make a half pyramid type shape, where you can leave boots and just about a fold up chair.

I have given this 9/10 for the only reason that the inner goes up first, but there isn’t really a way around this, it was on sale when we got it, for around £20 so for the price it is a really good buy.

We bought this tent this week due to gooutdoors having on offer at 19.99, we were going away for the weekend and at the last minute my 18yr old and her boyfriend wanted to come so hence this tent was purchased quickly.

We really wasn't expecting much but knew the high gear brand by Go Outdoors have a decent range and we were pleasantly surprised.

The tent itself was extremely easy to pitch in less than 10 mins although stated a 3 man its more a 2 man with some storage, we fitted in a double airbed and it still had some storage either side of the bed. It rained slightly and no problems arose, there were no problems with condensation as the tent has various ventilation points, and they stayed warm and dry.

It pitches inner 1st with a small storage space once the fly is up to store your shoes but nothing else. Overall its a good quality small tent perfect for use as we did for the older children and is very easy and light to pack away.

We've given it a 9 out of 10 because at 19.99 you just couldn't go wrong when most tents that price are single skin, as my dad says how can they make it for that price!

Myself and my partner have just got into camping this year, as we are keen hikers and wanted to expand the range of destinations we could go to by staying over - as well being able to go on short breaks without spending too much money! We didn't want a big expensive tent, and with there only being the two of us, and because we weren't planning on spending much time in the tent other than sleeping, we went for this one.

The spec says it's a 3 man tent, but once you have all your stuff in there too you'd struggle to fit a 3rd person in. It's easy to put up, even for novices like us, and very sturdy in the gale force winds we had the first time we went out in it! You can't stand up in it, which makes getting dressed fun, but I tend to take all my gear into the showers with me anyway (I'm not hardened enough to go to a site without showers yet!) It is very resistant to condensation, as it is double skinned. It folds up nice and small, which is great to fit in the back of my Fiesta. It also has a small 'porch' area, which is a handy place to stow your wellies in case you need to run off to the loo in the night! All the flaps pin back if you want to let some air in, and the front door has a mesh screen that you can open up if you want to get the air but keep the flies out.

Overall it is a great tent if you're not planning on spending much time in it and just want it as a base for exploring the area, and it's fantastic value for money.

Manufacturer's Description

Suitable for fun, festivals or weekends away, the Ion 3 is a simple, lightweight 3-man tent that's great value for money.

It's quick and easy to pitch, with just 2 poles needed, and it's small weight and pack size mean that it's convenient enough to carry with you on a bike or while backpacking.

Both inner and outer layers have ventilation points, to make waking up on those hot summer mornings a lot more bearable, and there's a storage area at front to keep your muddy boots and gear separate from your sleeping kit.

The pre-attached guylines are nice and bright to help you find the tent in the dark, or on a crowded site.
