2 Reviews of the Windermere 5
By: YorkshireBlue Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2012 Rating:
Having used this tent a lot more times since my initial review last year ago I feel compelled to come back and add to it.
There is a fundamental problem with the tent - it lets water in. It's not that the tent isn't water proof or anything, but there is a large design flaw. When closed, there is a gap between the bottom of the door and the floor, a good 1 or 2 inches high. Now in the summer this is fine, however when it rains it lets a lot of water in the tent and is incredibly impractical.

I managed to get lucky and pick one of these up at a bargain price - £45.00. Brand new, not an ex-display. And for that price it is a complete bargain.
It's quite cosy for a five birth, and any more than three would be a struggle. The living area isn't massive, but you can stand up in it which was key for us. However, you know the size of the tent when you buy it (at least we did as they had one erected in the shop) so there should be no surprises.
Another issue is that the groundsheet is not sewn in, and as no footprint is available there is potential for problems, however I haven't used it particularly bad conditions and it seemed to cope well enough in the drizzle. We bought a big-standard groundsheet to go underneath the tent as an added layer. However, it's an odd sized tent so it was hard to find - we had quite a large overlap which we tucked under.
Other than these small things, it's ideal for what we use it for - weekends away. If I wanted a longer stay or a family holiday I'd look elsewhere, but for the price I paid I certainly can't complain. But if I was willing to spend the RRP (When did anyone pay RRP for Hi-Gear stuff?) I'd again look elsewhere.
Putting up and taking down is fairly straight forward. I like ones where you put the fly sheet up first, makes it easier if if having to put it up in the rain.
Overall, for the price I paid I am really happy, but it wouldn't be my first choice if I was paying more.
