3 Reviews of the Hilleberg Nammatj 3GT

By: Stephenc  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2014   Rating:

This is a big, hardy, handsome tent.

Size to weight to strength ratio is superb. 4kg for such a big, strong tent is brilliant. It also compresses down very small if you need it to.

Attention to detail and workmanship of the tent is faultless. Stitching is great.

I won't go into the huge list of positives of this tent, there are enough reviews online that go into much greater detail than my time will allow.

The only slight negative is that the sloping foot end struggles to fit 3 rectangular mats in without a bit of overlap.

I'm nit picking. It's almost a perfect tent.

Hilleberg Nammatj 3 GT.

I purchased this tent for accommodation when on motorcycle tours. It was replacing a much loved Terra Nova Super Quasar, that didn't have the advantage of a vestibule area for gear storage. After 2 years and totally returning to car camping, I sold the Hilleberg on and returned to the Super Quasar which I much prefer and have recently added a Karsten 300 which is fantastic. I use these tents solo, or with an occasional 2nd person.

The Nammatj appeared to fit my requirement perfectly. I had a GT footprint, so regardless of the weather, I thought I'd got the perfect tent for camping on the coast, or on mountain sides.

On my first outing, I snapped a pole ! Amazing and quite devastating. I was on a headland and in near gale force winds and the tent was being continually buffered. I'd just settled down for the night when the tent side came in and kept coming. I felt assured that this tent was made for anything and was quietly pleased that I was prepared. Then the jagged end of a pole ripped through the fabric !

What I think had happened is: the continual buffering had caused the guy to jump the tent peg, making any tunnel tent very vulnerable. Probably my fault for inadequate pegging, but this is a feature that really don't like and I'll never trust a tunnel tent again. I fitted peg loops and karabiners to each guy so that guy and peg would never separate again.

Other than that mishap, the tent performed flawlessly. It's beautifully made and the fabric is first class. However, the fabric is very noisy and when it's windy it's quite a racket.

The sleeping compartment is tapered to one end and I din't get used to sleeping with head at the tapered end, which meant always getting in feet first. I think the Keron would be much more suited to me. However, I'm happy to be back in the Super Quasar for many reasons and for small tent camping, that's where I'll stay.

Outstanding all weather multi use tent. This is our 'go to' tent when we're not sure where we're going to end up pitching or the weather looks iffy. Used it in all seasons - from Summer in Cornwall to the depths of Winter in Scotland & Norway. It's truly bombproof in any conditions.

Pitches all in one, including the footprint, in less than 5 mins solo once you get the hang of it. Not cheap but utter quality, the many online reviews bear this out.

If you're looking for a serious all rounder with bags of room then this one is for you. It'll repay your investment many times over. We've used ours several times a year for the last 6 years & it still looks brand new. They hold their second hand value well too.

Buy one - you won't regret it.

Manufacturer's Description

Hilleberg Nammatj 3GT The best choice for any outing in any condition where low weight is of equal importance to strength, reliability, and roominess.

The Nammatj 3 GT is the master of both high and low country, equally suited for a high altitude expedition or a weekend walk in the local hills. This robust all-season, all-arounder pitches quickly and easily, can be taken down and moved in a flash, offers a remarkably large amount of room and exceptional strength, and is still lighter than most other tents in its class.

Because of its superb weight to strength ratio and compact footprint, the Nammatj 3 GT has become immensely popular with extreme users, such as polar travelers looking to save weight, mountaineers doing remote routes in the highest ranges, professional guides, and military special forces teams. But these same characteristics are just as highly prized by more “regular” users, as well: backpackers, cycle and paddle tourers, and anyone needing maximum strength while reducing weight.
