2 Reviews of the Holtkamper Utopia XM

This is a follow up to my earlier review having now used the tent for half season. I am still very pleased with the tent and it extremely versatile. Using the tent in the early season having a front section which can be sealed with a ground sheet using velcro fittings is great for all the kitchen area and taking off wet clothing before moving through a second door into a second living space which also has the two inner tents which can be put up individually to allow for either two berth or four berth sleeping area. The tent is well ventilated and gives good warmth with no build up of condensation when using small heater.
Weather wise the tent stood up well to wind and rain and was a good temperature inside during warm days thanks to its unique 4 ventilation system on the side of the tent catering for all conditions. The front ground sheet can be left out during warmer weather allowing lots of combinations to be used with the front side walls of the tent to suit wind directions and need for shade. The main inner ground sheet is not effected by this so still keeping the main living area clean, dry and warm. The inner tents have separate groundsheet with a warm fleece lining on top.
The front canopy is great to give you extra shade or cover from rain. A separate front section can be added similar in look to the inner door area shown in the photograph.
The tent offers lots of space during bad weather to move around and cook in with ease. The bedrooms are big enough for two adults to sleep at ease.
The tent takes around 30 minutes to put up and about 15 minutes to pack away.

I wanted to share my first experiences of my Holtkamper Utopia XM pyramid tent. I have had to purchase this direct from Holtkamper family run business in Emmen in Holland due to the fact at present there are no distributors in the UK.
I was attracted to the tent for two reasons, not only for the fact it is a large 4 man tent with two living areas but it can be erected very quickly and simply by one person. There are no guide lines involved and the tent is held up by 3 main poles and a series of elastic bungee type pegs around the outside. This enables the tent to wind stand very high winds as it moves with the wind rather than trying to fight it. Secondly I wanted a tent that was ecologically friendly which this tent is as the cotton canvas is naturally bleached with no added colourings or chemicals. It does mean it only comes in one colour that of a naturally bleached cotton.
The tent was amazingly quick to set up with the main pole holding the canvas up within 10 mins of arrival and the whole tent was pegged out in 30 mins. There are several options of course that it is possible to unzip the whole inner and outer groundsheet from the tent and remove the inner tent. This does then mean longer setup time but is easier to put away in smaller sections. The tent allows plenty of light inside and is cool in summer and warm in the winter. The tent has a unique all weather ventilation system on the two walls of the tent. This consists of four layers which are made up of gauze, plastic window, foil and canvas to give every weather type ventilation options.
The possibilities to the outer living areas also give flexibility in that you can have the front open, you can move the sides to let in more sunlight or block wind, or close all together and use as an extended living area.
The biggest disadvantages of the tent is that the inner tent comes in two sections and as its curved at the rear does hamper the use of some camp beds. There are plenty of storage pockets though and it comes with a sewn in warm fleece groundsheet. The other disadvantage is the tent is quite bulky when folded and weighs around 23kg. However with only three poles there is a space saving element there. The other drawback is the price with the smallest 3 man tent costing £2100 and this medium one at around £2500. You do get a lot of tent for your money and it will last many, many years.
In my opinion having looked at De Waard tents as well the Holtakmper Utopia did have a better build quality and was cheaper. I will post again after have used it more to give a further update.
