8 Reviews of the Freelander Deluxe
By: Fluffpillow Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2011 Rating:
Whilst camping at a festival my friend came along with the freelander DlX , so after we had a beer I offered to help him put up his tent he said no need, sit and watch the tent was up in 10 minutes and it had lots of space. I later traded down from my larger khyam to his DLX.
It goes up easy it still fits in the bag with the extra groundsheets, not the khyam ground sheet I like space round the tent.
Four adults and four kids have slept in it, its like the tardis for size suits family of 4 and dog with space to play, we always seem to have the party tent that fills up you can of course stand up in the tent.
As has already been said fully waterproof, large screen mesh windows (with covers), excellent ventilation, guy ropes luminous , poles for the porch, the inner sleeping areas have fly sheets and covers.
This tent is fantastic! Secure in the wind and cold, no drafts, Easy to put up and also to take pack away. Doesn't fill the whole of your car boot up it packs so well and small.
A great buy if you can find one. I gave the tent 9 out of 10 maybe I should give 10 out of 10?
The raining in door thing I have not encountered ( maybe its the way I pitch camp)? but I suppose I would buy the extra freelander canopy just havent got around to it. I have not had any broken poles and have been using the tent for a good five years.
Watch out as with all tents ! for trees etc making holes, gaffer tape or tenaious tape works great, but seam grip fixes them no problem and I have used seam grip to fix large rips in coats and waterproof canoe bags.

Disappointing purchase.
Lots of room and easy to pitch, even single-handedly. Minor niggles are a difficulty in fitting the tent properly onto the separate groundsheet and a tendency to leak water when opening the door.
More seriously, as others have commented, the arch and bedroom shock-corded poles break very easily, even in winds which could not be classed as unusually strong and no matter how careful you are in pitching it properly. Two of the pole sections split on our tent's second outing and needed to be repaired, and several of them failed completely and disastrously on the third. Khyam's total unpreparedness to respond to a polite query on the matter was not appreciated and does not reflect well on the company. A pity, since the tent suited us well in other respects.
Not recommended unless you don't mind constantly having to repair the shock poles.

Bought as old stock in 2012. Fairly pleased with the design. Only problem we experienced was that several of the arch and bedroom pole sections completely failed the third time out. Had to dash around buying spares quickly.
Note - this tent is out of production, and original spares are almost impossible to get.

Just back from our first use of the Freelander deluxe and we are very pleased with it. We have bought it as a short break tent as our other tent is a 12 berth Khyam and takes a long time to set up. Freelander was quick and easy to set up even in torrential rain. We invested in the freelander porch canopy which was a great addition as I agree with other reviews here that water does gather in the doorway without it. Seams also dripped a bit so will need 'anointing' as with any new tent. Would recommend and some good deals on at the moment.

Brought the Khyam Freelander Deluxe fist time tenting for over 30 years and very impressed with it. Its roomy, well made and with the groundsheet and carpet very cosy. We had weekend in Whitby in far from ideal conditions for our first tenting adventure and it worked great keeping us dry as a bone. Only addition I'm making is brought some velcro to fix groundsheet to lower tent skirt but certainly no regrets with the choice.

This tent is great! Very good in the wind and cold, and not draughty at all. Easy to put up and also to take down. Had to buy the ground sheet separately which, personally I think is a bit cheeky! The biggest gripe I have with the tent is the doorway, don't know if it's somehow too steep but when it rains it ALWAYS seems to leak into the tent and makes the surrounding ground sheet pool with water-hardly ideal! We are considering getting a carpet inner for ours but need to solve the aforementioned problem first!

Good tent easy to put up, you must buy the specific ground sheet for it, as it makes it a whole load easier, yes its a bit pricey, but worth it, suits our family of 4 with space to boot.
Great ventilation, waterproof, luminous guy ropes, poles for the porch, large mesh windows (with covers) inner tents have fly sheets and normal covers, could do with a few more inner pockets, on the whole a good buy

I bought this last year after having bought another Khyam that was much too large. I love it in the main and it is great having the separate living and bedroom areas. However, even after several times pitching I still get a bit of a panic on when bending the joints. There is always one that refuses for a while.
The angle of the door is a bit of a pain if it is raining because of you want to get out you have to crawl on the floor to get to the zip at the bottom and you can guarantee your head will get wet and the ground sheet under the door will get wet on opening.
It has not leaked in rain but I always seem to struggle to get the sides of the bedroom parts down to the ground nice and neat which can result in a rather draughty tent.
My main concern is the amount of tiny holes I found on unpacking this year. Don't know if that was down to cinders from a bonfire on our last trip last year. I did find the repair kit good but prefer to use tenacious tape.
One of the bedroom poles has bent a bit so will need replacing at some point. So I guess all in all not that good for a tent that has only been used five times!
