5 Reviews of the Indiana 8 TC
By: Coleylin Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2009 Rating:
This tent is the best tent we have ever owned. It is spacious, secure and very well made. There are 3 rooms in total plus a huge living area, for when it rains or you need a break from the sun. The beauty of the tent mainly is the ease of putting it up. The poles and holes for the poles are colour co-ordinated and its simply a case of sliding them in and securing them in the pins.
We have had 6 people in this tent and still had plenty of room to move around.
There is ample space for storage.
Overall we love this tent.

After lengthy research, we narrowed down our key tent requirements to size (8 berth for 5 family of 5 and dogs x2), polycotton (it would have to cope with Highland extremes and - hopefully - heat of Southern France). SIG and mesh was a must for midgies. Adjustable sleeping arrangements a real bonus. Steel poles to cope with pressure of wet canvas and wind.
We found a number of tents that fitted this bill perfectly, but frankly with the amount of camping we do we could not justify the enormous outlay required. Then we came across the Khyam Indiana. It ticked all our boxes except the steel poles and was incredibly inexpensive (new on Ebay - from shop with reputable score).
I am afraid it was probably the price that clinched it for us, but really we have NO complaints - the Indiana is positively palatial in terms of space. The fabric is lovely and quiet and the colours very tasteful. We tested the tent in sideways gale force winds - these did not wake the children - and rain to match. As previous reviewers have said - you have to keep the doors shut in the rain, but a porch would sort this and the mesh windows can be left open so there is plenty of adjustable through draught if required. It dried incredibly quickly. With regards to the poles - yes, I can see that they might snap, but a little extra time and effort - we're talking 5 minutes here - to make sure that you have them positioned as perfectly as possible at the outset and I really don't think you should have any problems at all. It is, however, definitely a 2 man job to erect the tent and we have it down to about 40 minutes so far, but we have always been 'wild' camping (in an 8 man TC tent!), so it could be quicker on a serviced pitch. I am not sure I would take this tent for a quick overnight stay, but that's definitely not what we bought it for.
Khyam have included lots of nice little extras - bedroom pockets, fluorescent guys, zipped guy pockets, colour coded poles, lots of mesh windows and vents - even low level bedroom ones, great storage bags.
While we haven't yet had a chance to test it out in searing heat - last year's bbq summer not quite materialising - we have been camped out in it in less than double figures and it was absolutely fine.
There is not much give in the loops that attach bedroom compartments and as we have had no choice sometimes but to pitch on an incline, then I would recommend taking needle thread and elastic for emergency repairs - this probably also has to do with 5 enthusiastic 5 - 9 year olds careering in and out of the bedrooms too!
So - seriously great tent and exceptional value for money. If you are worried about the poles: take some spare sections with you and tape - it still wont add up to anywhere near the cost of this tent's closest rivals. Even if you add a porch, I think you would be quids in and where nicer to enjoy a sundowner?

We bought this tent in 2008 following a disastrous camping trip where our old faithful Wynnster Tern 4+2 ripped as we were putting it up. We went and bought an Outwell tent that was pretty similar to the supermarket carrier bag mentioned previously. When we came to put it away, we ended up having to return for a refund - it had not stood up to the test of time :( On the way, we saw a tent exhibition, and stopped in.
Quite a surprisingly low sum of money later, we departed with a Khyam Indiana 8 TC, and smiles on our faces. We weren't disappointed.
Two trips on, I can't wait for the 2009 camping season. This tent has been put up in the pouring hard rain on one occasion and gale force winds in the other (we REALLY do not have good luck with weather when it comes to camping - I'd advise others not to go the same time as us if they want sunshine and warmth!), yet it was a pleasure to put up, as long as we had two people to clip the poles in, as they can be a little testing for one person to manage. They do feel a little stressed if the footprint isn't pegged down squarely, but after a couple of tries it really is easy.
The polycotton makes this tent a dream to live in, I could stay inside 12 months of the year! Plenty of room for us to store the bikes, camping paraphernalia and still have room for us to have guests for the evening. In high winds and rain, it is positively the most quiet and quality feeling tent I've been in since my childhood of green canvas 3 pole tents in the girl guides.
As other people have mentioned, when the tent is up, and it rains, you really have no other option but to keep the door closed - even putting the door up with the extra poles is of no use as the rain just pours in at the door opening. This hasn't put us off though, we'll be investing a small sum in the sun porch that should solve this problem.
We're going to buy a set of spare poles just in case (the other reviews have scared me!), and I'm looking forward to the 2009 season with excitement. Bring it on!

I'd love to give this a good review. It has loads of space but the tunnel poles felt a bit over-stressed. It looked good, the polycotton even felt/sounded good and you could stand up virtually everywhere, but the poles, as hinted at, were the Achilles Heel. In a light/moderate wind they broke, or rather three did. One ripped part of a sleeve. Khyam refused to replace the tent, instead insisting on a full refund. I was actually a bit disappointed, because the tent had so many good points about it. However the Khyam rep explained to me that they had severe quality issue with those poles, even though they are thicker than the the previous year's nylon based tent. I'm not an engineer, but I believe that poles with longer fibre-glass sections, and with longer metal sleeves, would have helped sort out the stress issue.
When Khyam gave us our money back we had to buy another tent. Our new Vango Yukon 800 feels like it's made from recycled supermarket shopping bags compared to the Indiana. It is very waterproof, but so is a bin-liner if worn sensibly. The Indiana definitely had a crucial extra special factor, and just loads of usable space, and I hope the company can sort out the quality of the poles, as I'm not going to fall in love with our Yukon.

Great size, great design ( at first glance ), cool in summer and warmer in colder weather due to the polycotton manufacture. Lovely large living area which will seat 8 adults around a small table. But.
Notoriously dodgy poles which require considerable strength to fix onto their keys. It is by no means uncommon for the fibre glass sections of said poles to splinter and crack ( we are on our second set after 6 trips ). When it rains the door must be zipped shut to prevent leakage into living area. Needs a sensible porch/sun shade arrangement - there is a polyester version available as an add-on but I'm not too sure how that would drain, need to check one out carefully.
On reflection I think we were trying to get the advantages of a frame tent on the cheap. Probably would have been wiser to cough up for the real thing. It is a lovely tent, and much admired, once it's up and the sun is shining. I like being in it. The whole family likes it. But it is a pig to erect and it leaks unless you lock yourself in!
