1 Reviews of the Ridgi Dome XXL Excelsior

By: Pitchnputt  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2007   Rating:

We've owned one of these for about 6 years now. It's the largest tent we have. Although it's not made any longer, there seem to be a few around secondhand and the Balmoral in the current range appears to be very similar but with a built-in porch.

There are some great things about it. It goes up very easily and quickly. I can pitch it on my own more quickly than two people pitching a smaller standard dome or tunnel.

It is large - the headroom is extremely generous (it's much taller than the XXL Classic in the centre and the bedrooms). I'm not tall at 5'11', but I can't touch the ceiling in the middle which is almost 8ft. I can also stand in the bedrooms (in the end near the middle of the tent).

The tent is vis-a-vis style, with a central area and polycotton inner tents at either end, each of which has two doors and a divider which means you can create any combination up to four double bedrooms. When we had 2 children, we'd only use one inner which gave a massive area at the other end for storage of buggies, etc. We've also had a weekend with friends and their children, each family having one end.

We also have the optional footprint groundsheet which I think is a necessity for muddy / dusty sites.

All in all it's a very practical family tent. The downsides? Well, it's rather large. At 7.5m long (plus guys) we've had to ask for a different pitch before now and often be creative in how we pitch it. The packed down size could also be problematic - this is a bit of a guess (because I haven't seen one packed down in quite a while) but I'd say it's probably not far off the size of an old frame tent packed down. It takes up a lot of space in the car - we borrowed a Khyam Tourer 400 at one time and this was absolutely tiny packed down by comparison (and a lot smaller when pitched too, of course).

Because of the size factor (and because I have mixed feelings about the vis-a-vis style) we're considering replacing it with, perhaps, a canvas pyramid. I certainly wouldn't change it for a standard tunnel or dome unless the packed down size was absolutely critical.

I found it a bit difficult to rate - if you're looking for a tent this large (and have space in the car), then the accommodation and the ease of pitching definitely earn it 9/10. We were lucky to get ours half-price from Khyam because it had the wrong bag (which I don't use anyway because it's too heavy as one lump) but I think they can be had for about £100 secondhand at the moment.

Would I buy this tent (or its equivalent) now? Well, no, but maybe that's just the old upgrade-itis.
