6 Reviews of the Seattle

Not a great design, the doors are not fully weather proof. Wind and rain can enter due to not being a fully zipped door. Three season's now it's leaked. Dark interior compared to modern tents. Cold and draughty gonna bin it soon. 2-3 people max with kit.Pitched in a storm last year with two others, ours the only one to suffer broken poles. Buy something else.

I don't think you can get the Seattle any more but it is very similar in layout to the Quebec, different poles tho, we bought this as our first tent and we love it.
Easy to pitch, and easy to live in.
We have now bought a sun porch and it works really well with all the kitchen stuff in the porch, allowing the inside of the tent to be used as a lounge, we took 2 15 year olds and 2 12 year olds and my husband and I with Granddad sleeping in a pup tent but living in our main tent, we had ample room

We have used the tent a few times. Found it to be good value for money. Our main gripe with it is the fact you feel shut in once the door is closed(which can be often in our British Summers). There is no view to outside. This of course is our neglect to not notice this when we bought it(viewed it with door open). I did get in touch with Kyham about the possibility of buying an extension or a porch. Alas none are made for this tent which is a pity as everything else is fine. I would have no problems buying another Kyham tent , but I would be more careful on the style.

Used my Seattle for 4 nights last week. Nice looking tent at a bargain price . My first tent not to use metal poles so was a bit disconcerted to see it flex in the wind! was absolutely bone dry but could use some velcro on the bottom of the door flaps , easy to erect and pack away and once it was up I felt quite proud! brand spanking new and impressive looking! UNTIL! I noticed that one of the corner ratchet straps was threaded wrong and had to be tightened by moving the peg , but worse was one of the anchor points was upside down, and to fully tighten it might have ripped it out of the seam, so will probably go in a high wind and ruin the tent. Would have got higher marks apart from this but have emailed the supplier and will let you know the outcome!
Just an update on my problems with my Seattle, got in touch with the supplier who gave me 3 options , repair , refund or credit against a new tent plus a footprint plus they pay return post ! My tent may have been slightly defective but the suppliers aren't! They are JRLEISURE and are polite and the most agreeable people . I'll buy all my tents off them in the future even if they,re more expensive than elsewhere . Nothing like no quibble guarantees and peace of mind!

The Seattle appears to be Khyam's attempt at making a tent suitable for us 'mere mortals', i.E. On a budget. I've not had experience living in this tent, only erecting it to help check it over, but since it's currently on offer at a couple of dealers for only £150, I thought people might like a review - albeit sketchy. Also this tent is not mine, it's been bought by a friend who experienced 'kite envy' (c'mon, we've all experienced it) after seeing my new beast, so I'm completely unbiased here!
OK, first off, what's with the poles? The middle couple of sections of each pole are thinner than the rest, the blurb states it's to maximise headroom, I on the other hand would suspect cost to be a factor. It probably saves a bit on weight tho, so that's no bad thing, except of course you have to carry 2 sizes of spare if you're that organised.
When we started unpacking the tent, we got a bit of a surprise, a free gift, if you like: out from the middle popped a very professional - and, of course, sharp - set of stitch cutters, no doubt some poor chinese seamstress will probably have to pay out a week's wages to replace these. How they didn't puncture the fly is anyone's guess, but thankfully, no holes!
That aside, the rest of the pitching went without incident: straightforward pin and ring arrangement, although I was a little alarmed by the cracking sounds of the poles as we flexed them.
Inside, with the bedrooms fitted, there's about a 2m x 2m living area left [2.1 x 2.6 to be precise, I just checked]. Headroom is brilliant - I actually had to stretch to attach the bedroom toggles to the ceiling. There are some storage pockets on the outside of both bedrooms, and a hook for a ceiling light.
The bedrooms can be partitioned to make two double bedrooms each side, but be warned, if you try to squeeze eight adults into these bedrooms they would have to know each other very well indeed!
The doors either side are extra wide, and would open the tent up lovely in nice weather; also in the doorway the groundsheet can be lowered so you don't trip over it; a brilliant idea I thought, having spent my whole holiday tripping in and out of our own tent, until I realised that: a) it pretty much obviates the whole point of a bathtub SIG, i.E. Being water/draughtproof and: b) the attachment points for this drawbridge-like affair are a little flimsy.
Although there were a few loose threads in the bedrooms they were only ends that hadn't been tidied (so that's what the stitch cutter was for!) rather than bad sewing.
My review might sound a little negative but I rather like this tent. My only real bugbear is its size: my own new tent, the Gelert Horizon 8 is 90cm longer and wider. Even the Horizon 6 is 90cm longer than the Seattle (that's right, a six-man tent is a whole 3ft longer than the eight-man Khyam).
Despite this, for a smallish family it would be ideal. Also, it's cute, it's got the Khyam name on it, and at £150 it's almost the same price as the no-name atrocities that blight our cut-price supermarkets.

The Seattle is a new tent for 2009 from Khyam. Ideal for those on a budget like us; we bought this for £190 from Camping World.
Erecting the tent is easy - after a few practices then I can get it up in about 20 minutes. One bonus is that you only need 2 people to help when putting the poles in and then pulling the tent into shape, then pegging the main points. The rest can be done by one person, ideal if you have children.
A further bonus is the ease at which one can get the tent back in the bag. Often a problem with tents like this but we've never had a problem. A good tip is when unpacking for the first time, write down the order in which you unpack and unfold the tent.
The tent itself is ideal for a family. It'll sleep 8 (would be a bit of a squeeze tho) but for 2 adults and 2-3 kids its great. Both bedrooms can be split in 2 using a divider. The main living area is large enough for a table and chairs - if you want to make it feel like home then buy the carpet. Well worth it.
The tent seems to vent pretty well - there is one vent each end which can be pegged open and airflow is OK.
A couple of gripes - firstly the points where the SIG attach to the flysheet round the doors (which allow the SIG to be dropped down to stop those coming in and out from tripping over) and not well enough attached. They are only sewn into the double stitching for the door surround. If one trips over the SIG then it's very easy to pull these out of the stitching. Somewhat annoying.
Secondly we had to take our first Seattle back because one door was double sewn at the top (the top bit of the door was sewn over twice). So quality control wasn't great but Camping World replaced it without hassle and the new one is fine.
Overall I'd recommend the Seattle. For the price it's pretty good value, easy to erect and easy to pack away. Head height and room inside is good. We've used ours already on a number of occasions without any problems, in both good and bad weather without leaks.
