6 Reviews of the Challenger 5
By: R14CB Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2001 Rating:
Well what a brilliant piece of kit
It may be dated but in my mind far superior to any dome tent.
Rugged but yet simple, easy to erect and very spacious. This is my 8th Lichfield ridge tent & it wont be my last.
Enough space for one however being 6'3 I struggle to stand.
Very well made & long lasting
10 out of 10 !

Have very recently bought this tent off eBay and is now the third Lichfield tent I own.
Bought this as an upgrade from the 3 man version which at times felt a little small for longer stays for just one person. This tent is ENORMOUS! Although I've only had it up in the garden so far, it far exceeds my needs, and would be a very comfortable tent for two or even three.
Really looking forward to using it on site and really testing it out.

A classic ridge tent that you can stand up in and would sleep 3 adults comfortably with air beds / 5 without (rubbing shoulders).
The flysheet stays away from the inner tent, allowing it to breath / not get damp. The inner tent also has a tough bath tub style base.
Our one is still going strong (originally bought by my Dad from Argos c.1993). Just been giving it a spring clean and re-waterproofing today and was amazed to see the model design patent date is 1985. We now use it as a festival tent or for short stays.
Only rating it a 9 as there are no curtains for privacy on the front windows (although we've retro-fitted some fashioned out of some poncho material and waterproof tape).
The fact that it proudly states: 'Made in Britain' show's it's age! They don't make 'em like this any more.

Great tent - must be around 20 years old and still going strong. Simple to use, well made and very reliable.'old style' maybe, but never had any problems. Treat it well, dry before packing away and reproof (i've done ours twice in all those years ) and you've a tent for life. As for family use -with a little planning it's easily coped with 2 adults, 3 growing children plus a dog and ensuing gear. Inner tent is roomy, porch area is adequate, all depends if you're taking the kitchen sink.Battened down it's endured all that 3 seasons have thrown at it over the years. Easy to erect and dismantle with the minimum of fuss.

I have owned this tent for years and it has given me sterling service. Very spacious for one person, it is tall enough to stand up in for dressing/undressing and big enough to hold a double size airbed with plenty of room to spare. The outer front porch area is big enough to hold a camping kitchen and accessories when not in use and I often use it to sit in when it gets a bit too windy to sit outside.
The outer tent awning gives a good air gap from the inner tent so even when it rains there is very little water ingress in to the inner tent, especially if the outer tent is well waterproofed, the flared lower edge keeps any run off from the inside quite well. There is a large inner door with two zips so it can be opened from the top or the bottom to suit. A fully sewn-in groundsheet is very durable, in all the years I have been using this tent I have never had any tearing of the canvas.
One problem I have encountered is one of the plastic inserts on the ridge pole across the top of the inner tent snapped when dismantling and was a problem to replace, just be careful when erecting or removing to not let the pole drop when on the spike so as to allow it to snap.
If you can find one of these tents available for sale secondhand, in good condition, snap it up if you want a cheap reliable tent for the odd few days away, without the hassle of erecting a small house for your stay.

I had to have this tent!
5 poles, 3 that make the frame to hold the inner which is pitched first, then throw the fly sheet over it. Additional 2 poles to form the porch/doorway. Pitched easily with 2 people and not much wind, think it might be a problem if it was breezy and you were on your own. Inner pod is spacious, living space not so much for a family. The couple I got this from said that for 2 people, a dog and equipment it was comfortable.I can believe it. Have yet to actually camp in this but can't wait to try it out properly.
