1 Reviews of the OEX Cougar II
By: ZacTheScout Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2015 Rating:
OEX are GoOutdoors' new 'mid range' brand. I Bought this on sale for £75 to replace/upgrade my 16 year old lichfield, but I gather it normally sells for £130 ish. I am a Scout Leader, and as such I need kit that is going to stand up to everything the british weather can throw at it. Tried this out on a very wet November weekend, with winds gusting to 43mph (according to the met office).
This tent has plenty of space inside, more like a 2.5 person. It easily accommodated me and another leader (5'9' and 6'3') with all our gear - ot something I have always found to be the case in a 2 man.
The porch with groundsheet is nice, as it gives you somewhere to keep boots dry out of the main tent.
Fairly easy to pitch, and felt nice and robust while putting up. The slightly odd geometry did mean that I had to reposition pegs a few times to get it looking just so, but this will likely improve with more practise.
I don't think I could have found much worse weather to test a new tent in - 40 odd mph gusts and driving rain all night. The tent performed very well no leaks, no flapping, no flexing. I was really surprised by how little it was affected by the wind.
Ventilation was excellent and we had no issues with condensation.
About the only thing I dislike about this tent are the guy lines, which are NOT easy to see after dark, and will be getting replaced. It is probably a little heavy for single person backpacking use, and the system for splitting it down into two bags (to allow the weight to be distributed between two people) means separating the inner and outer, which is a right faff.
Overall, I would say it seems a very good tent for the money, as good if not better than any sub £200 tent from the more established manufacturers, and certainly worth a look (especially if it comes up on offer).

Manufacturer's Description
A sturdy semi-geodesic framed tent with a decent sized porch for your wet and muddy gear - great for expeditions.
The OEX Cougar II gives you all you need for comfortable camping, whether solo or with a companion, but weighs next to nothing and packs down to a size that won''t slow you down.
With a simple semi-geodesic design, robust flysheet and groundsheet, and aluminium poles, it is tough enough to protect you from stormy weather. The groundsheet is pre-attached, making pitching easy and keeping insects out. The compact front porch gives you room to store your wet kit and boots.
OEX tents have been built to withstand the trials of outdoor adventures and expeditions. They use 7075 lightweight aluminium poles, with durable poly flysheets that won''t falter in arduous conditions, and will give you years of service.
The flysheet is very waterproof (rated to 5000mm) with a fire-retardant coating which will self-extinguish if exposed to flame.
Every OEX tent comes with a waterproof split bag, letting you divide the tent into two parts and share the carrying load. Each carry bag has pre-spaced buckle loops, so you can easily attach them to the outside of the OEX Vallo Rucksack. http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/oex-cougar-2-tent-p322022
