1 Reviews of the Atomatent Chapado

By: Deptforddave  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2015   Rating:

We purchased our Atomatent Chapado in June 2015 and have used it twice now for wonderful holidays in West Wales and Cornwall. The quality of the stitching and canvas really is superb and we are especially pleased with the space that the tent provides – which is quite exceptional. Initially knowing little about Dutch tents, we had seen a de Waard Albatros on a camping holiday in Sussex and decided that we would explore the possibility of purchasing one to replace our Outwell Wyoming. Canvas tents are heavier, but create a very pleasant space inside them and are not a stiflingly hot as tents made from synthetic materials. The particular Dutch design we liked are called storm, or pyramid tents – with drum tight canvas all round and a large awning at the front that extends the living space of the tent area. We looked very carefully at both the de Waard designs and subsequently Atomatent as well (which are hand made in Uden by two former employees of de Waard). Initially we were interested in purchasing an Albatros and noticed that de Waard actually sell their display models at a slightly reduced prices at various points in the year; however, the more we looked into it, the more we liked the slightly larger design of the Atomatent Chapado; which seemed to make sense for a growing family. De Waard also make a larger tent called the Vergote Zilvermiew, but the Chapado design differs slightly from the de Waard in that it has an additional two 180cm high poles at the back of the sleeping area, which gives additional head height space throughout most of the tent. This creates three large sleeping areas as well as a wide front living area. It is also very tall, which adds to the sense of space inside the tent. We use the central sleeping area for ourselves as it has full head height space all around; our two children are to one side and we use the other area as a store for the children’s car seats and clothes etc, which otherwise can clutter the tent. Overall it creates an airy and comfortable space, which is just perfect when you are camping for a week or more. There was a carpet provided for the sleeping area which adds to the sense of comfort and curtains that separate out the various areas (like most Dutch tents, there is no ‘inner tent’, but we have not found this to be a problem at all.) The fact that the canvas pulls so taut also gives a great sense of confidence in bad weather (of which there is a lot in the UK!) Both Pé Bauman of de Waard and Tom van Zanten at Atomatent were extremely helpful while considered our options. We paid for the tent by BACS transfer and Tom even arranged for his son to deliver it to the UK so that I could pick it up – which was really above and beyond. On the negative side they are heavy tents and, while they are not difficult to erect, they take upwards of an hour to an hour and a half to put up; which means that they are not ideal for weekends away. You also need to take care to put the large awning into the ‘storm’ position in bad weather (remove the front pole and point the canvas to the ground) – or it can get knocked about a bit at the front. I don’t particularly see the price as a negative – they really are great tents and, if like us camping is your normal holiday, the additional cost is offset by the fact that they will last for 20+ years and create an extremely comfortable space for the whole family to stay in when on holiday. They are a lot less money than most trailer tents, for example. We have received lots of positive comments from families on the sites where we have stayed and would have no hesitation in recommending an Atomatent Chapado to others.

Manufacturer's Description

Atomatent was founded in September 2007 by Tom van Zanten and Mustafa Abal. Both could now boast many years of experience in manufacturing of tents in one of the most famous studios in the Netherlands.

A real six-person tent for the larger families, people who love space in the Chapado tent, but also for the seasonal campers and leasing organizations.

The Atomatent Chapado is a pyramid tent that offers plenty of interior space relative to its footprint on the pitch. By placing two additional poles, 180cm high by 150cm, behind the two main poles in the sleeping area, it creates more standing height in the bedroom area. An additional effect is that the tent can be placed further back so the camping spot at the front can be used more efficiently.
