2 Reviews of the Fox Evolution X Bivvy
By: Robtherake Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2005 Rating:
Cheap as chips nowadays. I picked one up at the local boot sale; the bloke had only ever put it up once (in the garden, just after buying it.)It is ,for all intents and purposes, brand new and cost me just £20.
I have nothing to add to the above, except to mention that mine came without a skin and, inevitably, there's some condensation to deal with. Fox may well still have spares, now I come to think of it.

At the time of writing this version is being phased out and replaced by a more expensive replacement that is apparently better. It is available discounted at the moment for £149 representing superb value for money.
This is not really a standard tent but for the lone camper who wants comfort with rock solid reliability and is travelling by car this bivvy needs serious consideration. This is the spec.

After owning one of these for 4 years and with plenty of use it is still going strong and is in near perfect condition. I use it for fishing and camping visits.
First of all erecting the Evo X is a very simple affair. You connect a central pole to the two boss blocks then connect the main ribs one by one whilst tensioning the bivvy by pressing down on the blocks. It takes less than two minutes. Taking down is the reverse and just as quick.
The door is pegged out using 2 standard bank sticks, though I use the heavy duty Gardner twist sticks. The sticks thread through the door sleeving and then screw into the top fixings making it a very solid set up. The bivvy is then pegged out in the normal way and the adjustment / securing loops can be attached at the bottom as well. The bivvy comes with guy ropes if needed but in reality the set up would need a bulldozer to shift it so I have never used the ropes.
It can be configured in many different ways for height, width, front panel off, door panel out, and there is also a fixed mozzi panel. The door has 2 heavy duty zips with additional Velcro tabs at the side and has a tinted window panel that allows light in but adds privacy. The door is easily burst open from the inside for angling use. The zip tags take a betalight isotope making them visible at night. The door can be rolled up and secured in the open position.
The optional groundsheet clips in and is a heavy duty type. The bottom bivvy flaps tuck neatly under the groundsheet making it a draught free experience. There is also an optional winter skin which when added improves warmth in the winter and helps to keep cooler in the summer months. Without the skin condensation is barely noticeable as the material breathes very well. With the skin condensation is for all intents and purposes non existent.
In use for one person the bivvy is roomy, airy and comfortable. An elevated bed helps as the space underneath can be used for storage. It feels rock solid and its overall quality gives a lot of reassurance. Not enough height to stand up straight, I am 5 foot 9 inches, but still ok and good enough for example to get changed in.
All in all a very decent purchase and at the time of writing the whole kit, bivvy, skin and groundsheet can be had for around £250 which is fantastic value. It is very difficult to fault the whole set up as it strong, good quality, and a pleasure to work with. It may not be a conventional tent in the real sense and it certainly will not suit everyone, but these things are designed with ease of use, to be long lasting, and being able to withstand the worst the British weather has to throw at it. For me it is proven.
Spares are also available from Fox should you somehow manage to break something!

Manufacturer's Description
The original Evolution design is exclusive to Fox and has been the firm favourite of leading specialist carp anglers for over a decade. Lighter, yet providing more protection than a brolly, the Evolution is probably the most versatile shelter on the market. Simple, rapid assembly comes via seven Aero Grade aluminium poles each of which plug into a pair of solid connecting bosses.
The Evolution Bivvy X is fitted with a pair of swivel storm pole caps, mesh sleeve channels for ease of assembly and a new front design with individually removable panels. The Evo can be pegged at a variety of different heights and widths this gives the angler ultimate protection in really bad weather, while making it flexible enough to fit just about any size of swim.
Made from high quality 6oz nylon which has a Hydrostatic Head of 5000mm, yet weighing an incredibly light 5.8kg when packed, the Evo is amazingly quick to erect and dismantle and is unquestionably the best shelter for anglers needing mobility, but also comfort and protection.
