2 Reviews of the French Army F1 Cotton Pup
By: Caligula Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2001 Rating:
As a follow up to my review below, subsequent use has shown this tent perfectly capable of holding off 2 days of decent rain.
Apparently, this is not true of the nylon variants.
Packs much smaller than the lavvu (and now can be found a lot cheaper, although the polycotton version is much harder to find than the nylon one?), and is eminently backpackable.
Plenty of room for one and kit.

This is a review of the cotton variant of this surplus pup tent. These were originally supplied to the French military.
Being a pup tent it is a small, 1 or 2 man(tight) ridge pole less, ridge style tent.If that makes sense.
It is made of green polycotton or cotton of around 280 g/m cloth with a woven robust polyester bath style SIG.
Doors open both ends with 3 way zips and a mesh insect panel above. Down both sides are also full length mosquito mesh vents which can be shut with a long Velcro closed flap. So ventilation is excellent as well as access and egress for such a small tent. It is supported by 2 external, alloy uprights.
It is robustly sewn together with good reinforcement. Originally these were supplied with a fly tarp, and either that or a dosing of Fabsil would be recommended for foul weather.
Whilst nylon ones are commonly found, the cotton ones are now a lot rarer.
Dimensions:
6 foot 6 inches long
4 foot 6 inches wide
3 foot 1 inch high
Packs down to about the same size as a lavvu, as it includes the groundsheet, but weighs less.
The Polish lavvu is more robust, and will survive anything the weather can throw at it. This is a great summer tent for the spontaneous, who likes cotton, opposed to plastic tents?
