2 Reviews of the Grand Canyon Indiana Adventure
By: Amyface20 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2012 Rating:
I recently purchased this tent from Amazon having decided that I could not afford/transport a heavier and more pricey canvas bell tent.
Aesthetically, this tent looks brilliant. It is so easy to assemble and has lots of space (perfect for snuggling up with mates!)
However, on its first outing this weekend, it sadly demonstrated its ability to let water in as opposed to keeping it out. I thought I'd be safe with the pyramid shape and sewn in groundsheet, but with every gust of wind we experienced a little indoor April shower!
I am very disappointed and have contacted Amazon who are sending me a replacement model. I am going to waterproof the replacement Indiana and fashion a waterproof inner; the spec claims that the tent is 100% waterproof with a 3000mm HH so I shouldn't have to do this! However, as I'm not prepared to let my bell tent dream die a death just yet I will see if the replacement fares any better.

This 'nylon' bell tent is from the German outdoors company Grand Canyon that seems not to be known very much outside Germany. I choose to order this tent because I like the shape and spaciousness of a bell tent, and that it can be pitched easily and fast by one person. It is much lighter than a canvas bell tent, dries faster and definitely is cheaper, all of which was important for me.
The manufacturer image is misleading - the picture of the tent is right, but the ground- and side plan are wrong, they belong to the Grand Canyon Tipi. The Indiana has a a height of 2.5 m and a diameter of 4 m.
So far, after some weekends camping in good weather, I am very happy with it, but of course you get what you pay for. Grand Canyon say it sleeps 8, but it must be built for 8 very small scouts on small SIMs, sleeping around the (very sturdy) steel centre pole like spokes on a wheel. I did not measure the diameter as the announced 4 m but 3.8 m. We use it three persons on SIMs in one half of the tent, than the other half is left for other activities and spacious enough. If you want to use airbeds, half of the tent would be filled with two standard ones, laid with the side to the centre pole.
The tent comes with no inner, and Grand Canyon does not seem to produce one, but it has some hooks in the top that might be used for hanging a mosquito net. I have sewn an improvized inner and attached it to the hooks and to some toggles, I fixed to the sides of the tent. This helps keeping the climate cooler in daytime and warmer at night.
I was surprised by how little condensation there was to be found in the morning, although the three vents in the walls had been nearly closed. The Indiana has the same ventilation as the typical canvas bell tent, the ventilation windows in the walls have flaps that can be closed with nice strong zippers.
The door has a mosquito net that is fixed to the groundsheet by zippers, the door itself does not have this feature and, closed without closing the mosquito net too, leaves a gap, because the edge of the groundsheet falls down. Might be fixed with some velcro, but it is a bit annoying.
Another strange thing is that the guy lines are black. There are a lot of them (good), but everybody trips over them.
One weekend it was a bit windy, and the Indiana behaved well.I would not trust it in a very strong wind, but since I only use it as a weekend tent I just stay home when the weather is not too good. I have not tried it when raining yet, but the taped seems and the HH of 3000 make me confident, and the roof has a very steep angle.
All in all a nice and spacious tent for the price, although I hope that I one day might be able to afford the real (canvas) thing.
You get what you pay for, but considering the price I think it is a good tent. I had no opportunity for testing the Indiana in rain and wind yet, but the HH 3000 makes me confident, and the roof has a steep slope. The steel middle pole and the A-frame in the entrance are very sturdy. All in all a tent that I hope will give me many nice weekends, while I save money and hopefully one day can afford a canvas bell tent.
