1 Reviews of the Relum Giant Pearl
By: MissElaineous Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2012 Rating:
The Relum Giant Pearl has excellent quality canvas, and I have 2 layers of this as I also have the optional flysheet, so it always feels really dry in there whatever the weather.
It's a shame the groundsheet quality does not match the canvas, as this has split in one corner, right where a pegging point joins it so it's been very awkward to patch up.
I think for a canvas tent of this size, the poles could be a bit thicker, though I haven't had any problems with them yet. I added some spring links to make erection easier. Some ridge tents of this size have a centre pole to keep the ridge pole straight. The Pearl doesn't, and after a while the ridge pole does seem to dip slightly in the middle. Again, it's not caused any problem to the stability of the tent and a centre pole would get in the way a bit.
It is very dark inside due to the colour, especially with two layers of thick dark canvas, have even had to turn a light on during the day to see what we are doing. Great for lie-in's though, I definitely sleep later in this tent than in my cream canvas ones. There is only one small mesh ventilation panel with a drop down opaque plastic window, which is at the top of the door. A couple of panels in the side walls would be an improvement. I guess I have been spoil with my Touareg and Bell Tent. The Pearl is an old style tent, sturdy and reliable, but without any frills.
It's suprisingly spacious inside, can put a double bed at the back just in front of the rear pole, and it leaves plenty of space at the front for living in. The large bell provides plenty of storage space for clothing and personal belongings.
I bought mine to be painted in a Carry on Camping theme as it looks like the tent used by Sid and Bernie in that film. It's definitely a tent with character, with or without painting.
I have no idea how old this tent is as I bought it as 'old stock but unused' so have entered the year 2012 as this is when I bought it.
For all my minor niggles, I have still given this tent 8 out of 10, because the canvas is great and that's what matters when it comes down to it, a tent that's going to keep you warm and dry, and one you enjoy camping in.
