1 Reviews of the Trio 4 Berth Frame
By: Pingvin Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2001 Rating:
This is a 30-40 years old Danish canvas Trio Frame tent. I guess it's age from an early seventies photo on the Internet of a Trio tent of different type showing the same distinct design for the inner. I found it in a car boot sale, and the fact that it is in fantastic condition - the canvas a bit faded, but still strong, and the only parts I had to repair/replace were some rubber rings and the zipper, which had given up after all those years - shows that it is real quality. I am the third owner, and the second owner told me he used it many times, in all conditions and especially on long trips to the UK (with the inevitable British weather).
The sewn-in bedroom floor is thick and strong, which of course adds to the weight, but it is a very good quality compared to the thin, cold and noisy tent floors of today. The mud flaps are made from the same strong material.
This Trio tent has a simple ground plan resembling the modern tunnel tents with a door in the front and the bedroom pod in the opposite end. There are big panorama windows on each side and in the door/front. The ground plan is approximately 4m x 3m.
The tent has a simple and strong steel frame that can be adjusted. There are 4 'legs', and although it is quite heavy, it is possible for one not very strong person like me to pitch it alone.
The Trio tent is about 2m high at the highest point and has standing height in the entrance, too.
As a 'retro' tent this tent has the colours of it's time - red, brown and yellowish, with a orange giraffe skin pattern for the bedroom inner! It even has fringing over the door.
I had no chance yet to test the tent in the rain, but the previous owner told me that he used to rainproof the tent regularly, so I will have to do this too.
Up to the seventies apparently Trio frame tents of different types were the only make of bigger tents seen on Danish campsites. Those old tents can hardly be found in Denmark any more, but in the UK from time to time old Trio tents show up for sale.
Although I don't know the exact type and age of my tent - it has no name tag any more, and the Trio company has closed down - I can recommend to buy one of those retro 'gems', if it pops up for sale somewhere. To judge from my own Trio, you will get a tent that might last for some more decades if treated well! Ten out of ten for this quality and the tent's old fashioned charm.
