1 Reviews of the VRX 500S
By: Ratty Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2006 Rating:
We were sitting supping a beer or two at Bosworth Water Trust waiting on some friends who were going to be using the tent for the weekend. Time ticked on, and there was still no sign of them and it was getting darker and darker by the minute. Eventually they arrived at about 8pm, in the pitch black, so our first test for the VRX 500S was how well it goes up for the 1st time in the dark!
The instructions are sewn into the inside of the bag, a nice touch. How many times have you seen the instructions flutter away in the wind?
We cheated slightly as any sensible person would, and put the car headlights on and shone them in the area where the tent was to be pitched. Although we could still barely see anything, we managed to easily work out the colour coded poles against the colour coded sleeves and soon had the poles threaded through and ready for the next stage.
As with most tents now-a-days, the poles sit over the pin on the ring at the end of the tensioning straps, and these slotted in very easily and the tent started to form its shape. It was not a windy evening, so we did not need to peg out any corners before we started.
Once all the poles had been connected to the pins and all straps tensioned, we raised the front and back and the tunnel effect of the tent became apparent and we were ready to peg out. There are lots of guy lines on this tent, making it secure in harsh conditions and we decided to peg them all out. It took about 30 minutes in total, with three of us doing it, to get this tent out of the bag and ready to use.
The tent is very bright with many windows and skylights, and a variety of doors to choose from, depending on where the wind and rain is coming from! The living area is more than adequate for a table and chairs, cooker and other camping essentials. The large bedroom compartment allowed plenty of space for the double air beds to be put in and the clothes bags too, and has a divider to keep the kids away from the adults, and allow privacy.
Packing away was a painless affair too, as the tent comes in sensible sized bag, which we got everything back into easily, helped with a couple of compression straps to pull it all tight.
Overall, the tent withstood the elements well over the weekend, bearing in mind it was a miserable February weekend we used the tent. It provided more than enough space for the family of four that used it for the weekend. We also liked the fact that even at over 6 feet tall, we were able to stand up in the tent, meaning moving around was not such a pain in the neck!
