5 Reviews of the Birdland 4
By: PetrB Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2013 Rating:
Great tent, we have used it during May '13 bank holiday weekend, 2 adults + 2 teenage girls. You can manage 2+2, but I'd recommend it only for short weekend brakes. You can't squeeze more then 3 beds into bedroom, one of adults, must sleep in living area. For longer holidays I'd recommend it only for 3 people.
Put up is easy, done in 15-20 minutes. Once standing, it's smart tent, light inside, with excellent head room. I like storage for small items on front side of bedrooms, it's nice practical touch.
Tent seems to be well made. We didn't have any rain or heavy winds, so I can't comment on that, but when shook, it feels very sturdy.
I have only few minor issues with it:
Slopping door
- difficult for smaller person to zip down front door without stepping inside the tent (issue when you've dressed up and have muddy boots on!). You have to reach high zip and lean forward in the same time.
- water or condensation drops in the tent when it's opened, extension is a must for rainy days or longer brakes.
Condensation / ventilation
Tent feels really warm and cozy, which is not a bad thing! But it comes with the price. There isn't enough ventilation points. Only front door, small back window, and two small panels on the side. We had a cold and humid nights. Inside of tent we had fair amount of condensation, specially in rear part of tent (back side as well as roof above bedrooms).
With only 1 door, it takes a while to get rid of it, which can be problem when you have to pack and leave camp early. When packing and drying up the tent, I suggest to remove bedroom at least half way down. We also used old towel to wipe out worst condensation.
Otherwise we're really happy with it. I'll update my review once we have some rain and I can report on its water proof qualities.

Here is an update to my earlier review of this tent, we have just spent the weekend camping on the West Dorset coast and my initial views on this tent are confirmed that it is a very good one. Pitched in less than 15 minutes , loads of useable space in the living area, we had a table,a couple of chairs, a small table with cooker, coolbox and lots of other stuff my wife insists on bringing, yet we did not feel cramped and could easily walk about .
Two negatives, The electric cable port and lamp loop would be much better if located at the side and the light loop just in front of the inner tent .
The rear corners of the flysheet suffered badly with condensation which might suggest that the rear vent is too small or that additional corner vent are required, the living area had very little condensation. The weather was very cold at night and not much wind so this did not help the problem. I can't comment on how the tent stood up to wind and rain because we not experience any. When choosing this tent we did consider a Birdland 3, the Birdland 4 is a much better tent even if only used by a couple.

I have just purchased this tent and intend to use it for weekend camping (usually on the coast ) . So far I have only put it up in the garden , very quick to erect ,easy for one person and with the centre steel pole seems very stable , it also has an internal roof pole in the living area which adds to the stability of the tent just like the Navada M . The inner tent is narrow compared to the width of the flysheet (2x 120 wide ). You can't fit 2 airbeds into a 120cm bedroom ,so it's not really a 4 berth tent. This is ok for me as there is only two of us and we can remove the internal zip divider and place our airbeds any way we want . This tent has the usual sloping front door so when it's raining you have to be careful not to drench the floor . The living area is quite large with good head height and is light and airy .So many tents come supplied with a small bag which makes it nearly impossible to pack the tent into ,not this one , it come with a large bag that makes packing the tent away very easy , full marks Outwell .Be aware that this tent for it's size is quite heavy and the bag as I said before is large . This might not be the tent for you if your car only has a small boot . I am very happy with my choice and think this tent will do all I want it to .

Bought this tent for weekends instead of using the Hi gear Kalahari 8 for just the two of us.Its a great tent, easy to pitch taking around 35 mins without rushing. We used the Kalahari carpet for the living space which is almost a perfect fit. We bought a Coleman queen raised air bed which fits by removing the bedroom divider with plenty of room either side for ease of access. We have only used this tent for one weekend with good weather so cannot comment regarding rain and windy conditions but seems very sturdy. The only issue we encountered was condensation with all vents open but I think it was mostly dew as it was September and probably not an issue with the tent. Packing it was around 40 mins again casually and went straight in the bag which ended a lovely weekend camping.

This is a great tent for 2 people loads of room in the bedrooms which means you can have the airbed facing anyway that you want it, the living area is more than enough , we had one of the fold away table bench's and still had enough room to fit in the two camping chairs as well with enough room to still move around in there, also the curtains make it feel much larger when they are down and lots of light allowed to be let in . The tent itself is really easy to put up and only took us 20 mins to do , really well made tent which is what you would expect from Outwell , only issue is the sloping door at the front which does let water in when it is raining but that can be cured with the extention for the front. This tent stood up really well to it's first use as the second night we hade 70mph winds and rain , no issues at all with water or moving about with the wind. Would recommend this tent to anyone who is looking for 2-3 people , keeps the warmth in there at night as well which is a bonus with none of the condensation in a morning which you get with most tents. All in all a really great tent to own.
