Bought to replace our Kampa Filey after 10 years of brilliant service - wanted a tent you can throw up in 20 minutes, the Birdland is brilliant for quick getaways and has help up brilliantly so far (in the back garden) - will update when tested in the wild, overall this is a quality tent, and with the front extension brilliant space for 5 (4.5 really) and a dog!

Likes:

Easily put up the 10/15 minutes with 2 people.

Colour coded poles, guy ropes and pegs.

Huge living area.

The 2 bedrooms can be used as one if wanted.

Very study in strong winds and rain.

Lots of little storage pockets in the bedroom pods and in living area between the bedrooms.

Huge windows are great, so if the weather is bad and you are all zipped in you don't feel closed in.

Built in ground sheet.

The carpet for the living area makes it cosy and warmer.

Dislikes:

Sloping door, which means it can rain in and when you open the door it falls into the tent.

This can be solved by buying the front extension, which is great as it gives you more room undercover, very handy for cooking under in rainy weather and extra storage space.

We did not realise when we bought the tent that it was discontinued and a few months later were unable to buy the correct extension but we bought the Birdlnd L extension.THE BIRDLAND L EXTENSION DOES FIT THE BIRDLAND 5 TENT

In my opinion this is a great tent and I love it :-)

A good sized tent we fit 4 adults in the living space with table and shelving unit, sleeping area wouldn't take 4 adults in comfort. Children maybe ok. It has stood up against some pretty strong rain, it is very 'flappy' in the wind! the door is difficult to use in the rain so have to be quick in the wet! its fairly easy to put up, just watch the video first! getting it down is harder, make sure you pay attention how it unfolds as this will help when putting it back. Could do with an extra couple of poles to reinforce the rear over the sleeping area and across the top to link both supporting poles. We have used it lots and it still in great shape!

Price: It's not the cheapest of tents but you really are paying for the quality. If you are a regular camper you will know what I mean. We did however find a couple of little niggles, a window tie missing and a very small tear in the floor of the inner tent. We are waiting from a response from Outwell about these! Despite this, we are still impressed.

User friendliness: Very easy for two people to erect. The plastic pegs are OK for softer ground but take a couple of metal spares to make a hole first if stony. It's not a 5 man tent. It's a two adult and two children tent. The smaller sleeping pod is just about big enough for a double air bed and that's it. The larger side affords a little extra space. Living area is great and the extension, well worth the extra money, is invaluable for cooking/storage/wet weather seating. Incidentally the 2014 model now boasts an entrance door canopy so if you don't buy or use the extension you can now open and shut the door in the dry. The wet weather access issue has been commented on by previous reviewers of older models.

Construction: Very sturdy. Had some torrential downpours and not a drop came in. Hopefully built to last. Large windows and the ventilation flaps work well too. The steel pole really does strengthen the whole construction and the guy attachment system works well.

Summary: Early days for durability but hopes are high. We seem to have found an excellent dual purpose tent that really suits our needs. We can use it with the extension as a family 2+2 tent or without the extension as a spacious 2 man holiday tent for a week or two when you need the extra space to make it really feel like a holiday!

LIKES -

Strong construction - ease of erection - good layout - big enough for 2 adults and 2 dogs - could probably replace dogs for 2 young children but dogs & children may be a bit of a squeeze at bedtime. Stood up to medium rain & wind well. Bag a good size - particularly useful when packing up.

USEFUL -

U-Tube erection and packing videos (also on Outwell Site) - none specific to this model but similar models fine.

DISLIKES -

Sloping door makes it vulnerable to bad weather without the Extension.

Door mesh sheet is zipped separately from fly sheet part which makles opening from outside cumbersome - also sloping side means you need to be tall or stpe inside when opening from outside and closing requires a real stretch.

Guy rope pegs (fluorescent) look good but plastic bends or breaks if pegging into hard ground.

EXTRAS -

Extension is a must for rainy weather.

Footprint made erection and packing up significantly easier.

Carpet adds to comfort and luxury feeling but slips a bit (will take a rubber backed runner for entrance(inside)next outing.

After reading many many reviews of tents on ukcampsite.Co.Uk spending 5 hours solid reading, I bought a Outwell Birdland 5

As soon as I got it I set it up in the garden to review it, last thing I wanted was to discover problems when away from home.

Here is my opinion of it.

Weather : 2 days April showers and 2 days non stop (sometimes very heavy) rain, light wind.

Looks : A smart tent comes in a neat holdall and is nicely packaged with a few spare pegs, section of pole and pole tip. Once erected it is a smart tent.

Erection: Fast. First time touching a tent in 20 years but with the Outwell colour guided poles, pegs and luminous guys I erected this mostly on my own with a little help from the missus in 15 mins. Now I know how it goes, I will no doubt cut that time down to under 10 mins.

Size : A small, or rather compact tent. I have 2 adults and 2 small children. Sleeping compartment : We fit in this comfortably however I wouldn't like to squeeze another person in. Living area : Large enough for us to live in, however I wouldn't like to cook in it. Hint: I am buying the porch extension as a kitchen area.

Windows : Good bay windows at no time did I feel shut off from the outside world. All the window covers do up from the bottom up, so half windows are possible as well as 'blackout'.

Groundsheet: One of the reasons for buying this tent was the fully enclosed zippable groundsheet. There are no gaps for wind or rain to penetrate, or kids or dogs to escape or bugs to seek human blood . Perfect.

Weatherproof. States upto gale force 9 and with the Outwell Wind Stabiliser System and I don't doubt it, this tent is sturdy. Best I have seen or 'shook'. In all the July rain this tent did not leak a single drop. Nothing. Even with the kids treating it like it was an outdoor play house, not a single leak. Nor a tear. One of my kids is autistic and plays rough very rough. Not a tear in sight, at no time did I fret about the safety of the tent or him getting tangled or tied up.

Loves: The storage rack between the sleeping compartments ( hopefully you can see it on the pics I have added) There is also a support across the top of the living area ideal for hanging a light from. I love the quality feel and the fact it is weatherproof :-)

Downside. Sadly there has to be one. The outer door zips are fantastic, very strong with weather flaps but . The door flaps inwards, meaning that any water on the door at the time flicks inside the living area. ( I have included a pic so you can see what I mean) Now this isn't too much of a problem, a towel soon mops it up, but have 2 kids running in and out, and you soon have puddles and no more dry towels .However, that said, an extension porch will fix the problem and as I need one anyway .I best run along and buy one.

Summary. For the money a fantastic tent but I would strongly suggest buying the extension porch as well. If you want safe, secure, dry camping . This is the tent in my opinion.

The Outwell Birdland 5 Tent is the largest sized version of this popular range of compact tents. The Birdland 5 is a 3 room tent with a 3+2 bedroom arrangement plus a large living space.

The simple construction is a revelation with a single steel pole and single fibreglass pole plus fully sewn-in groundsheet. The Outwell Birdland 5 has a large living area which measures 2.6m x 3.6m - giving plenty of space for table, chairs and a storage unit too. Out front, the large panel front door can be either rolled-away or propped open to form a sun canopy (porch poles not included).

On either side of the living space are no less than six large windows to allow in plenty of light, each featuring adjustable toggle-up curtains so you can control the light and level of privacy required.

The other extraordinary feature for a tent erected with two pole sets is the 1.9m minimum headroom which negates any uncomfortable bending or crawling. The tent has also received a facelift for this season with the introduction of the new two-tone colourway and the wave-shaped inner tent attachment points.
