6 Reviews of the Carolina L and M Side Extension
By: Evacartmell Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2009 Rating:
We have the Carolina M and found it to be a superb tent. The extension however is very badly designed as it is impossible to fit the extension close enough to the tent to stop rain getting in.
We would love to add doors like you have done Flick55.
Am I right in thinking you made yours from an Outwell windbreak?
You have made a superb job and I would welcome some tips if you don't think that's being too cheeky!
Where can I buy zips that long?

I made a carpet to fit my side extension on my Carolina and also another for my Vermont extension - it could be done for any awning or extension I would think. I bought a carpet the right colour - brown for the Carolina and green for the Vermont - that would be a bit too big (from whatever Outwell tent that will suit - use the Outwell site showing the plans of the floor measurements for the different tents) and cut it down. I then used the left over edging (which I unpicked) to edge where I had altered the width or length. Custom carpet for whatever extension you like. I did the same with a groundsheet - I customised them to fit under the carpets as well. There is a picture of my Carolina here which shows this.

I have just uploaded some pictures of my tent with the extension fitted. You will see the doors I made (which work fine) and also how this extension does not fit the tent properly. I have still rated this 5 out of 10 because it works for me as a cooking area. I am still shocked that Outwell have still not modified this design - they cannot have even tested it before it was marketed. Mine was bought in 2010 and they are still the same now.

I used my Carolina M and side extension last two weeks in June 2011. The side extension was/is completely hopeless in the wind and the bottom ended up tearing. The wind gets between the tent roof and the extension and makes the extension over the tent roof act like a wing.
The extension doesn't fit the tent, it doesn't clip to the tent as claimed and it doesn't connect at the sides at all because the tent poles are in the way, it doesn't peg down properly either.
The Carolina M is a great tent for two people but the extension lets it down and is a waste of money

This is a shoddy piece of kit. As the previous review says it DOES NOT FIT. We bought it to cook in but you cant use it when it rains so this defeats the purpose in buying it. It is a nightmare to pitch--took us 3 times as long as the tent did-. We have had one 2 night stay away with it so far and already we have a tear along the seam between the mud-flap and the wall- and this without more than a breeze. What will happen when it really blows?

This extension added valuable space for cooking to my Carolina. I'm no tent maker, but I added doors which work perfectly - my doors work better than the rest of the extension :-)
BUT - this extension just does not fit the tent properly. The side poles of the tent get in the way and the rain pours (and I mean pours) through the gaps. Huge puddles on the ground. Luckily my cooker and stand just fits out of the way. I am sure that Outwell can't even have tested this or they would have made it fit better. There are no clips to connect to the poles as claimed by Outwell and even if there were, they wouldn't work! The only fixings are the two ropes on the end of the material that goes over the tent roof. We actually tie-wrapped the poles of the canopy and tent together to try and minimise leaks, still didn't work. Not sure Outwell will listen though.
