4 Reviews of the Dakota 6
By: Porkjones Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2010 Rating:
The Dakota 6 is simply a fantastic tent and more versatile than the Montana 6 to boot! Having 2 wide entrances (one is a wide porch) gives you options on how to site the tent. The porch is wide enough to store cooking table & stove, boots, shoes, food etc without impinging on access or the main tent area.
Our tent has been tried and tested in high winds, torrential rain and sun. It performed superbly. We added an outwell carpet (or if you prefer use some rugs) which gave the tent a real cosy feel. We had a 4ft x 2ft table and 5 chairs set up in the main body of the tent for eating in the dry, and a cooking table in the porch plus all the other 'stuff' and there was still plenty of space.
Pitching is easy with 2 people and possible on your own - check out You Tube for the Montana 6 video or perhaps there's a Dakota 6 one now. But remember for the Dakota to put in the dome poles before fully tightening the guy ropes. The SIG covers the whole of the tent footprint i.E. Including the porch.
There is good ventilation. Not just with the two insect screened doors but there are also vents above the windows and zipped vents on each sleeping pod. Having wall-to-wall windows with curtains was actually a great idea. You can adjust your view from the tent inside to suit the sun or the scenery and avoid that 'shut-in' feeling that you get with small window tents. Each window has a screen/curtain which can be easily dropped down halfway (on all but corner ones) or rolled up for a floor to ceiling view.
The windows made no difference to getting the air out when packing away compared to our old Outwell tent. The poles come in a separate bag and the main tent bag/box is very robust with trolley wheels at on end.
We did a lot of research before buying the Dakota 6 and can say that its the best 6 man tent we found. Especially with the Outwell quality and details - perhaps it popularity will improve, as those who choose a different tent just don't know what they're missing! Well done Outwell, 10/10.

We bought this tent in July and think that it is brilliant. The tent has a generous amount of living space, and the two porches give you good versatility on arranging your interior. We have found a couple of methods of pitching the tent, and found a YouTube video of a Montana being erected, which can also be used on the Dakota. (Very good if there is only one of you available at the time).
We were a little concerned with the number of windows in case it created a greenhouse effect, but as previously stated this is not an issue. It is the same as any other tent in this respect, and there is excellent ventilation throughout, with two large doorways which can have the mesh left down. With the numerous windows it does give a great variety of options on how private you wish for your tent to be, and also enables you to choose what views you want. This is the first tent we have had with a sewn-in groundsheet and it was luxury. We also had the footprint and carpet to boot, which made it very nice for the family. We have put the tent up a number of times and it has become very easy. Taking it down is just as simple and after watching the Outwell videos, we have the art of folding it down to a tee. Before purchasing the Dakota, we have considered a number of other options, eg. Montana, Coleman Weathermaster, and have to say we feel that we have made the right choice for us. There is a large bag with wheels that stores the tent. I would say that the pole bag is a little weak, but I suppose nearly all are like that.
We are a family of four, plus a dog and its crate, and this tent provides plenty of space and is very versatile. Brilliant tent, when can we go camping again.?

This tent is fantastic. It is bright (even with the windows covered), airy and very spacious. Our first attempt to put it up took about 30-40 minutes. We followed advice from reviews for the Utah - do the main tunnel section first and then the porch. It has four main steel poles for the outside of the structure (3 for the tunnel section and one for the porch) and then 2 fibre glass poles that go inside for added strength. The tent has good height too.
The sleeping pods were already attached and so as the tent went up, so did they. Each pod is meant to sleep 3 people. In truth they sleep 2 adults and a blow up bed very comfortably - would be tight to have 3 adults I think. There are two pods which are separated by a zip, so can be made into one.
Having a sewn in groundsheet was wonderful and as we'd also bought the carpet, felt we were living in luxury! The SIG goes throught the whole tent including the porch. The carpet covers the living area and porch but does not go under the sleeping area. We also have the footprint but as the weather was so lovely and dry, we didn't bother using it. Seemed straight forward - just make sure it's up the right way!
Taking the tent down was easy although trying to get it back in the bag took a little longer - really need to make sure all the air is out!
The weekend we went was very, very hot but this did not prove to be a problem. The tent has two doors, each with a mesh section to keep bugs out or to allow a nice through breeze. There is also extra meshed ventilation above each window and by the sleeping pods.
I was concerned that as this tent has so many windows and therefore so much plastic, that this could make the tent unbearable in heat but this wasn't the case. We kept the 'curtains' up the whole weekend and used the mesh doors.
The curtains are easy to put up so if you are worried about privacy and feeling like you are in a fish bowl, you do have the option of having them half up or fully up.
There is also a skylight of sorts on the roof of the tent that can be covered or left open - perfect for star gazing!
There are several pouches by the sleeping pods that are a good size to store bits and bobs.
There are plenty of guys around the tent and they were easy to use. The tent also came with plenty of strong, large, plastic pegs.
The tent comes in a wheely bag so easy to move. The poles came in a separate bag but could fit in the tent bag.
All in all, I found this tent to be wonderful. It was sturdy, it has a great living area, it looks good - it was perfect. I would highly recommend the Dakota 6. Outwell have done well!
