4 Reviews of the Harrier L Smart Air

By: Helen63  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2014   Rating:

As campers of 25+ years we liked the idea of an inflatable tent. We'd recently used 2 smaller tents as regularly camp as a family of 4 adults, but got fed up of having to pay for the extra tent.

The one and only plus point for this tent is the reduced time of pitching/striking camp. Pegging and guying takes just as long, but with no poles to thread through it is certainly quicker.

Cons:

As a family of 4 adults the sleeping pods really only accommodate 3 when using anything bigger than the smallest SIM. 2 standard airbeds do not fit in the smaller pod. The XL version wouldn't have fitted in our car so wasn't an option.

Large and heavy pack size.

Lack of ventilation.

Only a one way zip on the front door. Every other tent we have owned has been 2 way which has allowed it to be open at the top to improve air circulation.

Front door can be tight to zip….According to Outwell this is because “The design of the door can make it a bit hard to zip because of the rain valance, however if the tent is pitched correctly then the zipper runs quite smoothly. The closing of the door can be made easier if the customer holds the fabric at the top where the zipper changes direction.“ The problem area we have is actually 12 -18 inches from the bottom of the door, not the top!

We have used this tent for a total of 21 days over two summer in France.

This year we returned home with a dew damp tent.Never before have we been so grateful for that!

Whilst the tent was pitched drying at home we noticed slight bubbling of one air beam. Didn't think too much of it and packed it away. However seeing other comments of this bubbling we re pitched some weeks later to find 50% of the air beams now bubbling.

We contacted Outwell via our retailer who instantly offered to replace affected beams.

We asked for all given how rapidly they had deteriorated and asked what had caused this.

Outwell will not say why this has happened; only that they are tested 'We test our tents thoroughly in more extreme conditions than what can be found in Mainland Europe. As for any product you should however always take necessary precautions for proper use, details which can be found in the instruction manual for the tent'

Our 2014 tent had NO guidance as to reducing pressure when using in hot temperatures. We used common sense and only inflated to the lowest bar/psi as this year we had high 30 degree temperatures.

We now have a tent with 2016 spec air beams (according to Outwell) that do not have any temperature restrictions., but lack confidence that we won't have a repeat performance next year or worse.

The previous reviews say it all! Quite simply a high quality, spacious, easily erected inflatable tent. Plenty of living space, lots of attention to detail and proven to be sturdy and strong in howling wind and rain. OK, it's not cheap , but look on it as an investment that will repay dividends in the many happy holidays that you will have with this tent as your temporary home.

We have never camped before. At all. Ever. So, we decided that if we were going to give camping a try then we would take a very big gamble and go for a truly great, albeit expensive, tent. Then, if we hated it, we would know for sure that camping was not for us. Plus, it looked highly likely that we could flog it on EBay and get a good price for it.

I'm glad to say that our Harrier will not be listed on EBay for sometime yet. The fact is, it's absolutely, completely brilliant. Even with us, inexperienced campers, we have found it a breeze to erect. It is incredibly sturdy and stays remarkably cool in warmer weather and nice and cosy when it's a bit cooler due to the wonderful polycotton fabric. There is no flapping noise when it's windy and you feel utterly safe, cosy and secure in it. There's loads of space for myself, my husband and seven year old daughter.

The design is faultless. The seams, the fluorescent guy ropes, the zips to enable you to configure it in different ways.I could go on and on.Outwell have sat and thought about every single aspect of this tent in minute detail. It's a masterpiece of design.

So why have I only given it 9, not 10 out of 10? Well, I have to agree with a previous review which is the lack of an awning. The truth is, the porch area is just not big enough if you want to shelter outside. Also, an electric pump would make inflating the tent even easier for us glampers. So come on Ouwell, get cracking! Get those two products on the market and then I can give this tent those very well deserved full marks!

We're experienced campers but of the small mountaineering style but we wanted to introduce our 1yr old to a first camping trip that would hopefully go on to be many more. The Outwell harrier l smartair promised to be quick to erect, spacious and sturdy and it lived up to its promises. An unseasonably cold August week in the Lakes threw torrential rain and 30mph gusting 60mph winds at us and could have ruined the holiday but the tent remained stable and dry, really quiet with barely any movement. The smartair system meant it flew up and came back down in no time, invaluable when you've a toddler running round! The only reason I've scored it 9 rather than a 10 is the porch area is small and at the moment an awning isn't available leaving you a bit exposed when cooking dinner but we knew that when we bought it and it was a compromise we were prepared to make to get the huge living area which benefits from full height head space throughout. Looking forward to many more camping trips as a family now.
