4 Reviews of the Hilo Reef
By: J Lo Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2013 Rating:
We love this tent. Having spent hours reading reviews stroking lots of tents, we finally decided to buy the Hilo Reef, and we are not disappointed. Its great quality, and well designed, we were super cosy in March this year, in very wet and windy conditions.
We found it super easy to pitch, and a solid construction, with nice little features like the colour coding posts, the Velcro straps to hold the guy lines when packed away, central lantern hanging point with cable tidy straps and the mesh pockets are very handy too.
We love the fact that you can open the whole front, and that it has lovely big windows, and a little canopy at the front instead of the sloped door ways you see on so many tents, but most of all I totally love the colour. The colour defiantly swung it for me, its just such a joy to spend time in, even on a grey day you wake up to a sunny feeling from that lovely warm orange glow of the tent. In fact I can only see one issue, they have stopped making this tent! What a colossal shame I say, if you find this tent on offer snap it up.

We have just been away for the first time with our Hilo Reef tent. It was bought to replace a Sprayway Valley 8, which we loved but found just too big for a lot of sites and not so handy for touring.
We opted for a polycotton tent and are really pleased we did. Camping in October in Kielder we found the tent to be really cosy and warm and totally watertight, even through some real torrential downpours.
We set up with our stove outside the tent and while it was ok cooking under the front canopy - it might be a wee bit exposed if raining and windy. We are looking at getting the front extension for our next trip to give a little more sheltered area for cooking.
The tent was easy to pitch, between myself and my wife and we were enjoying our first cup of tea about 35 minutes after beginning.
The quality of the tent is fantastic and well worth the money.
Looking forward to our next trip in our tent!

I agree with the previous comments. This tent does tick every box! The carpet for the lounge is indeed very thin. We have a Sunncamp prism carpet which we use in the bedrooms and may add to the lounge as well. We also have the extension with 2 Outwell windscreen lux windbreaks which we place in a semi-circle at the front. We have also added a breathable ground sheet to the extension which works brilliantly. This tent is a lot of money but it is a brilliant investment. It is now a light yellow/apricot after 8 weeks in the sun last and this year. It looks awesome and are regularly asked about it and give guided tours to other campers! If you are smaller than 5'5 I would recommend some folding steps to help attach the extension over the main tent's peak. We have also used the tent in gale force winds in Cornwall. Solid as a rock!

Being our 4th tent, much research went into this as it is intended for prolonged use in all weathers. We had various criteria: large windows, fully opening door, weather protection over main door so you can sit in tent and enjoy open view no matter what the weather and all the internal space is usable as living space, ie. Sides/door not sloping in you can't sit/walk round edges! Unbelievably this 'ticks all the boxes'. Also unbelievable is how few tents on the market do fit his criteria. I think I need to change career into tent design! The canopy over the front door is pure genius! Why are the majority of tents designed with the door sloping back towards the top so that when you open the door when it's raining, all the rain off the door runs in tent - not this one.
The living space is really generous, 3 of us with comfy chair each and dog pen for 2 dogs and still room to walk round without falling over each other!
The poly cotton does exactly what it says on the tin- keeps the tent interior cool when the weather is hot and warmer when it is cold out.
It was also much easier to put up than I imagined. Having previously had an Outwell Montana 6, I thought it would take a similar time, however it is much easier and quicker to erect, taking only about 30 mins on our second trip even though we put the pins in the poles starting at the back which made it more difficult! (Thanks to hubby)
Only 1 niggle - the carpet is appalling quality (as it is a separate item I have not let his affect the tent rating). Our last tent was the Outwell Nevada M, a much lower quality tent than this, however the carpet for that was superb, a thick plastic backing and good quality top cover. The carpet for this tent is like cling film! Or as hubby says 'from shag pile to Lino'.

Manufacturer's Description
Families of up to five can relax in this three room tunnel tent that features two bedrooms and a spacious living area where everyone can sit together and enjoy the special atmosphere generated by our very own Outtex® Airtech polycotton in its new Nugget colour. The feeling of spaciousness is enhanced by the large tinted windows, additional side door and front wall that can be opened completely, half or less. Door heights have been improved throughout and the front door now zips to the groundsheet to seal against bugs and drafts. A large ‘eyebrow’ canopy protects the front of the tent. We’ve added loads of Outwell innovations to the Hilo, including our unique Outwell Wind Stabilizer and Easy Pegging Systems for enhanced stability and easy pitching. The Outwell Wave-shaped Hanging Point System keeps the inner tent seams stress-free.
Recommendation: A more compact style that nevertheless offers great space for up to five.
