8 Reviews of the Indian Lake
By: Happycampers98 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2011 Rating:
We bought this tent because my husband liked it. Its just for short stays really as we have a maui reef with extension for long stays.
The first thing I noticed about the tent was that it is really tall, no problem finding it on a site.
The tent goes up really easily, we leave the groundsheet pegged in as its quite confusing to reattach because there are straps that go underneath. If you were to unzip when packing away I would suggest that you label them.
Once you lay the tent out, peg the groundsheet down, put the centre pole up and its stable. Really surprised me how quick it was.
The living area is quite small, there are 3 of us and I would imagine that any more in the living room would be cramped.
Plenty of room in the bedrooms for us 3 and the dog.
The only gripe I have with this tent is the inability to be able to close the vents above the window. This makes the tent cold all of the time. We have attached sticky velcro to them so they stay shut, whether this lasts I don't know but if not we'll have to think of something else.
Loads of storage pockets in the tent for all of your stuff.
All in all its a great tent, good quality, lovely material, a real eye catcher on the site which we like but the unclosable vents lost it 2 stars.

This is a great tent for a long stay proper camping holiday. It's well designed and easy to put up- once you've got the knack. However, taking it down in the rain is pain as the poly cotton is heavy as it is and just gets more so and then you need to dry it out completely before storing. The totem pole is hard to pack away as they never seem to go back into one another. The stitching is a bit dodgy in places and for the cost could have been much better. It easily sleeps 2 tall adults and 2 kids with room for another adult or child. I wouldn't attempt 6 adults though. There's lots of space inside for a table, chairs, boxes, clothes etc and if it's raining you can (although not advised) cook in the bathtub entrance. The other drawback is the size of the bags it comes in which are massive so you'll need a big car. The tent is cool(ish) in the heat and warm in the cold. We have the additional footprint and the carpet which are advised. The tent is very sturdy having withstood various storms and heavy rain. This is a great family tent for a long stay but not good as a quick pitch overnight one. Overall a stylish buy with lots of space and comfort.

Until this summer we had only used our Indian Lake for long weekends, but enjoyed near on 2 weeks at the excellent Fauxquet Valley campsite on Guernsey this August, where it worked superbly for us.
It's dry when its wet, cool when it's warm, warm when it's cool, bug and (largely) draught free, probably just like any Outwell polycotton tent, but felt particularly secure in strong winds, and noticeably less 'flappy' than most conventional tents nearby.
There's plenty of room for the 3 of us, and we love it for it's function and style, but admittedly we're not the sort of campers who use huge tables, armchairs, cupboards etc, and we always cook outdoors. More 'boxy' tents might be a bit more efficient space-wise and so maybe a better choice for some, but they wouldn't put a smile on our faces like the Indian Lake always does.

I have very few gripes with this tent. My first attempt at building the tent took 4 hours and this had me wondering what I had let myself in for!
Thankfully, I can now comfortably build the tent in a little over 50 minutes - without any assistance. The tent suits our small family needs very well, the only gripe being the complete lack of awning space. This will shortly be solved by our purchasing of the Outwell flexible Canopy. We can vouch first hand experience in the 'storm capabilities' of the tent after one evening in Dorset recently. The tent coped admirably in gale force winds and driving rain.

I bought one of these a couple of months ago after seeing them at the local Yeomans camp show.
We put it up loosely in the garden and soaked it through with the hosepipe before using it.
The weekend that we took it out it was blazing hot in the day and a torrential thunderstorm all night.
Result! No leaks, no rustling material, warm when its cold and cool when its hot.The tent never moved at all. Very solid and took some real buffeting.
Like the other reviewer it would be nice to have a bit more space in the living area, but we do all our cooking and storage in a utility tent so there's adequate room for all of us.
The tent is really well made and the addition of loads of pockets is very useful.
Groundsheet is very thick and having the ability to zip it off is really good if the groundsheet is wet and the canvas is dry.
The hardest thing to suss out is packing away the centre pole!
All in all very pleased with the quality of the tent. Though you do end up showing the neighbours around it at times!

We bought this after our Montana 6 was destroyed in high winds. Thinking that the Montana was far too big for three of us. The Indian lake is cosy for three A bit more space would be nice but it's quite usable. Easy to put up,one adult could do it alone and quick and easy to come down and pack. The best point is the material which keeps the inside cool and shady on hot days - a revelation. No more being driven out of the tent by 8 am because of the heat. Ours has never leaked although there is a substantial condensation build up on the inside of the fabric overnight. I'm told this is normal just don't touch it and it dries up, which tallies with experience. The look isn't for everyone, it attracts attention, when we first got it we had other campers coming to look inside. All in all if you can take the look and don't mind the price it's a good buy for 2 / 3 man camping.

I was given the tent for my birthday (joint pressie from many members of the family!), and despite some initial misgivings after reading reviews elsewhere am very happy with it so far.
The first erection us 2 hours but we were being deliberately slow and careful. It went up fairly easily, pushing the big pole up wasn't that easy, but then found that our daughter had been round and pegged in the groundsheet so there wasn't much leeway in being able to lift it! Otherwise it was OK - not sure I'd want to do it on a wet or windy day mind you.
The tent stayed dry in some pretty wet conditions - although the first time it rained some of the fabric did leak quite badly - luckily on the porch door rather than anywhere really vital. And this only happened once, all other times it rained this didn't happen - maybe the cloth was settling down or something? The only other leak we had was through one of the attachments for the inner pockets which seemed to let in water towards the end of the fortnight - this we will chase up with the shop. This makes it sound as if the tent was very leaky, which isn't the case at all - it leaked the first time it rained, and then seemed to have a small leak towards the end of a sewing point. The rain really did absolutely lash it down while we were there - the farmer who's orchard we were staying in came out one night to make sure we were ok and was amazed we were as watertight as we were - his house was leakier apparently!
The weather was pretty windy too and here the tent was unfaultable - no rattling of the fabric, no movement at all in fact.
We'd pooh poohed the Outwell doormat before the trip, but it was useful as fairly non-dirty entrance into the tent as the mud increased around the doorway. The porch groundsheet proved easy to clean and we were glad it was separate from the main groundsheet - initially we'd thought it should have been integral. We were wrong!
There were plenty of pockets, but there is scope for improvement here as we'd thought there could / should have been some way of hanging a lantern in the bedrooms, and why not have pockets on the reverse side of the vertical lot in the middle?
Also I think Outwell have used their Universal Inner tent and this didn't really make best use of the space within the tent - there is quite a large gap between the inner and outer tent in places and this could be reduced to give better space for the sleepers without compromising weatherproofing (IMHO anyway!)
Our tent doesn't have the footprint groundsheet nor the inner carpet, and I'd say these would be worth getting if you can afford them or get them in a deal when buying the tent.
I'd hope the footprint would make packing the groundsheet away easier / cleaner as well as being cheaper to replace if it does become damaged than the main groundsheet.
And I'd reckon the carpet would make things even cosier now we know it is pretty weatherproof.
Overall, for a family not used to a decent tent we were pleasantly surprised by the space and weatherproofness of the tent over two weeks in Cornwall in changeable weather conditions - ie typical British summer weather! It also looks pretty cool!

I bought this as a family tent (2 adults, 2 small kids) and have used it on 3 occasions so far. It stands out across any campsite and we have had no condensation problems or any leaks during one weekend of heavy rain. It was also noticeably cooler during a 'heat wave' than a friends polyester tent.
The 6 berth inner is very comfortable and spacious with the four of us, with a feeling of luxury you would expect from a polycotton tent.
The tent is quick to erect due to only having one main centre pole, and has easily been put up by one adult whilst the other entertains the toddlers.
It is the smallest pack size of the Outwell polycotton tents but still has ample space for a family of 4 and we can fit tent and gear for a long weekend into our estate car without needing a roof box.
The downside of this tipi design is not having an awning to sit out and cook under in less desirable weather conditions. Next time we hope to have purchased a tarp to go in front of the entrance.
The other downside is that although Outwell design quality tents the manufacturing of them doesn't seem to be up to the same standard - within our few outings a loop of material attached to the top of the tent has come unstitched and a groundsheet loop which looked unbreakable has snapped.
Above the windows are 2 large vents which could have done with Outwell adding a device to narrow these like I have noticed on some other tents. It can be quite drafty at night but a strip of velcro has solved this.
Given these problems I would still not swap it for anything else.
