6 Reviews of the Maine L

By: Themanns  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2009   Rating:

Very stable and water proof tent with good size living and sleeping areas however as with most tents the berths stated are smaller and I would say this is a four berth not six if you are using airbeds. It takes us about 20 mins to put up longer the first time as instructions not very clear. The first time we used it was during a week of gale force winds and the tent didn't budge. Could do with a fitted ground sheet in the living area and it's a shame there is no porch extension available. Over all a great tent and very good value for Money.

When you first open the bag you think 'oh no what have I done' but this tent goes up so easily a child could do it. On our first run at putting it up it took 2 of us 30 mins and now we know what we are doing we could get that down to 20 mins(not bad as we have never put a tent up before). It is spacious, comfortable well made and a good bargan for the quality of the tent. We would recommend this tent to anyone and cant wait to use it again.

I have used this tent at the beginning of April and found it stood up to the weather well. The tent was light and very roomy. It did get to 2 degrees so the tent did get cold. As per the other review better instructions would be good this was the 2nd time camping and our 1st with this tent. It took about 35mins to put up which was good considering I made it up as I went along. Room fitted great and I think it could be put up in about 20 mins next time. All round a good tent.

We also bought the Maine L from Millets recently at the knockdown price of £125 and used it for the first time last week in very rainy Devon. It was quite easy for two of us to put up although I'd have liked more guidance on what to do with the various straps, flaps, loops and tensioners as the instructions were minimal. (For example, the illustration shows the black flaps pulled out from the tent and pegged out rather than tucked under inside the tent, but this was impossible because the position of the metal poles prevents this) We are experienced campers but have only recently come back to camping, and are used to more basic ridge-type tents.

Like the previous poster we also had a minor 'mishap' when the stiching on one of the loops at ground level, below one of the window panels pulled away from the fabric. I never travel without needles and cotton and was able to do a quick and passable repair job. The mesh at the top of the one of the inner compartments also pulled away in one place, but I can't swear that this wasn't due to 'misuse' by our young daughter!

While we were away we had heavy rain and strong winds for five out of the seven days and for that I can't fault it, not a drop of water came in. Even when the inner tent touched the outer tent in one place it was still as dry as a bone.

All in all, in spite of the snag, the tent is good quality overall. It's very spacious for 3-4 people but I agree it would be a little cramped with 6. I'm looking forward to using it again soon!

Got this tent 1 week ago as a present. My husband and I are are complete camping novices, and managed to erect the tent in just under a hour. We made a few mistakes, but went to a local tent display shop to see how it was supposed to be done. We camped out with our 9 year old niece in the back garden, and although there was very heavy rain all night, we all stayed dry in the sleeping compartments. There was a little water coming in under the doors in the living area, but I suspect that this was due to us rather than a fault with the tent. The sleeping areas fit 1 double or 2 single air beds, so you would struggle to get 6 people in the bedrooms unless you ditched the air beds. The living area was large enough for a small table and 4 chairs. Adults are able to stand up easily in all areas of the tent, and it's great having windows for additional light. My only slight disappointment would be that there is not a fitted groundsheet in the living area, but we can live with it. Can't wait to go on our first official camping trip, hopefully sometime soon

I bought a Maine a few weeks ago from Millets website (the tent is exclusive to millets) and picked up a fantastic bargain. The rrp was 250, then it was reduced to 180, then they knocked it down to 125 plus I had 20% discount for shopping online so I had it for 100 pounds plus postage. I was looking around for a bargain tent for a few weeks. I didn't want to spend much more than 100 or so but didn't want a poor quality tent. It was out of stock for a few days so was chuffed when I was able to buy one. Anyway, when it arrived my wife and I set it up in the garden. We were surprised at how big the living area was and how simple the tent was to put up after we got the hang of it. It packed away easily as the bag was a generous size. That weekend we decided to take our four kids away to sunny Angle in West Wales. The weather was steaming hot but with the front and back doors open it was no hotter inside the living area than outside. The living space was ample for storage and for the kids to mooch inside. Bedrooms were a decent size but would be a squeeze if 6 adults were to kip in the tent, although I understand this is the norm with most tents. It did us fine though. Disaster struck as we were dismantling the tent to go home! One of the cups that the fibreglass poles go into fell off. The stitching had came away. We checked the other cup and the stitching was dubious there also. The cups on the other side of the tent were well stitched though. A pants end to a good weekend. I rang millets customer service on the Monday and they explained they would have to send a courier out to pick it up, then it would have to checked to see the fault, then a refund/replacement would be given. All this would have taken perhaps a few weeks which was a pain as we are planning on taking the kids camping a few times over the six weeks hol. The other option would be to take this mega heavy tent to a millets store. So I have taken it back and luckily they had a replacement in stock. I've yet to check the new tent and lets hope its all good. The staff in store were surprised to have a faulty outwell as they are normally good quality. All in all the maine looks a well built and designed product apart from this one snag which i'm hoping was a one off. It was simple to erect (even one person could do it in non-windy conditions), spacious, and a good bargain if you can get your mits on one!
