4 Reviews of the Maryland XXL

By: Happy-camper-sw  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2010   Rating:

Saved up and bought the Maryland XXL. This tent is big but may be too big for some sites. We fell in love with the size and the matching colours but soon found plenty of faults.

1= main skylight windows let plenty of water in so bucket and bowls had to be used (Not as bad as the next pitch to us who had just bought a new Outwell tunnel tent in brown the had a built in swiming pool after one night of rain)

2= when you started to look close this tent it was not the Outwell finish what people love and rely on windows seals ugly seems not well stitched.

3= main poles started to rust up @ the end of the hols

4= look at the stripe pattern in the bedrooms they do not match the bottom to the top are back to front.

Absolutely LOVE our Maryland XXL. VERY VERY heavy pole bag[had to split into 2 bags and even then I struggle to lift them being 5ft 4] but otherwise wonderful. Very spacious main area. Love the front porch.Has flap down windows leaving mesh ventilation in door between main porch and living area which together with mesh at back of rear bedroom and ventilation flaps above windows gets air through well.L ots of space in main living area great for wet days.Sewn in ground sheet is thin but needs to be or tent would be too huge to lift but are glad bought tent carpet.

Very very light inside even on cloudy days. Love small hanging rail inside porch for its usefulness and lantern hanging bit in ceiling. Found it helpful to get a separate pair of poles and guys so could prop up back door and porch side door at same time to help let breeze through and shade doorway on hot days.

Is a big big tent though so make sure you have pitch area right size. 2 comments to outwell. It's a great tent so hope they start making it again and if/when they do definitely need to arrange tent poles in wheely bag and/or 2 bags preferably. Great tent if you need lots of space. Takes us about an hour to get up but think will get faster the more we use it.R eally helps to have 3 adult sized people to get up as needed 1 person to push up inside at same time as 2 others put up poles on outside. Might be able to put up with 2 people but would be harder work.B y the way tent itself is VERY VERY heavy. I don't think I could lift it in or out of car without risking back trouble. I am 5ft 4.

We bought this tent after much searching and have just returned from our first weekend using it.

It is quite quick to get the main tent pitched, but we did spend quite a bit more time getting the built-in ground sheet flat. We've found that you need to ensure that the tent fabric is evenly spaced on the poles so that it doesn't pull.

The inside space is great - we have three children & a dog and they all went in one of the 3+2 pods which we opened out. My husband & I had a 3 person pod & the other 2 person one, we used as a dressing room - great as you can stand up in it & not have all your clothes littering the tent up.

We actually removed the large 4 person pod at the back & used that as extra living space. We especially liked the enclosed front porch as we had all our cooking stuff in there & the children could come in & grab food etc without having to go in the main tent. It rained quite heavily one night & there were no problems. Packing up was pretty easy as well, but be sure to follow the video to get it n the bag!

My only negative comment would be the instructions and DVD - if this was your first tent, they are pretty sketchy in places.

Have just returned today from our first set up of our new purchase of the Maryland XXL. My husband and I put it up between us and it was pretty straightforward. We did download the pitching video from the Outwell site to our Ipod to take with us to help us but everything was very robust, well made and the sheer scale of the tent meant that even in a fair breeze we had few problems.

We are very impressed and relieved as we were concerned that this would look just too big and conspicuous but that was certainly not the case.

The colouration and designs on the tent are very subtle, so if they are your thing fine but if not they are not that noticable.

We are seriously impressed and can't wait to use it again. We have yet to use it in the rain but I will update review as and when I have anything to report. We see it as real investment for our young family and are glad we went for the XXL and not the XL.

If you know you are going to get the use out of it, why not get the space you need for the years ahead.

We had a small issue with the trolley bag on delivery as it had a couple of marks on it, but this was soon rectified and a replacement sent.

Really pleased. You can just feel the quality of this tent as you pitch it and if it rains it really is not an issue as there is so much living room inside and big windows, you may be inviting others in to join you!
