3 Reviews of the Maui Reef Sun Collection
By: Neilkachu Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2012 Rating:
We bought this tent to replace our poly Vango as we were tired of the fibre glass poles snapping in the slightest breeze and needed a bit more room and comfort.
It does take a while to put up and does need 2 people to get it raised but once you've got the frame up and pegged out the corners 1 person can manage. Outwell have some useful videos on Youtube to speed you along, use the 2012 technique so the poles are all secured before raising.
Zipped in groundsheet is great and once in you're snug from any draughts. The ultra long zip looks like a potential failure point to me.
Once up it's rock solid. We go to a very windy site and it didnt budge one inch, the poles don't flex and the canvas tightens up so well you can ping a coin off it. It rained pretty much everyday for hours and we saw no leaks at all.
(Yes, as a holiday it wasnt great!)
The headroom is great, no stooping anywhere but If you're short take a stool, unlike Mr Outwell most people will not be able to reach the bedroom clips!
Masses of room inside, we got everything we have in and were not cramped unlike the old one. Bed pod is a 2 part one, would have liked to be able to make it into one whole one, even with the separator out there's a bit of material in the way.
The orange colour is a welcome change from the blue/beige and due to the large windows doesn't feel gloomy. Each window has its own curtain that can be adjusted to adjust privacy.
Really the only minus was the pegs being below the standard of the tent, this has been solved for 2013 it seems but I was a bit disappointed.
So overall, this is one amazing tent, roomy, solid and very flexible, we love it!

Bought this tent to replace our Vango amazon.
The tent goes up in about half an hour as we leave the groundsheet zipped in.
The tent has amazing head height, i'm 5'6 and I cant reach the top bedroom toggles to clip them in.
The living space is just about right for the three of us plus dog as we take a sofa and cupboard as well.
Used it at Whitsun in some of the worst weather for ages, it never stopped raining and was windy, had a few leaks from the seams but am unsure whether this was because we hadnt weathered the tent before.
The tent had absolutely no problem with the wind at all, I would say it is bomb proof. In our previous tent I used to worry if the wind was strong but this took it all in its stride and we slept soundly and never worried once.
We bought the front canopy for it to give us shade, shelter and somewhere to cook and that made the tent just perfect!

Have just bought this tent and only camped in it for two nights at the bottom of the garden. It was a really hot weekend during the day, but cold at night. The tent was a nice temperature during the day and not overly cold at night - we had no heating. I love the polycotton, no rustling material flapping about, took us just over an hour to put it up - it was quite simple we are just total novices - but we have since watched the youtube 'how to' and it should be a lot quicker next time! Tent is nice and sturdy.
Plenty of living space inside. Snug sleeping area for 4 with a double and two single airbeds. Would have liked the zipped material divider between the rooms to have been lower so you could have one huge room and put beds in any configuration - there is an arc of material which just gets in the way - in my opinion!
I like the zipped in ground sheet, easy to install.
My huge disappointment is with Outwell itself although the tent was ready for collection 1st April, we were not advised that there would be no carpets or footprints available until 31st May! So really I have only tested half a product! Have three camping trips booked before we get the carpet and footprint.
UPDATE: Still disappointed with Outwell!
It is now the 10th June 2011 and there is still no sign of the Maui Reef Carpet being delivered to me. They have finally delivered the footprint but no sign of the carpet. The next date I have been given is 28th June! Let's see what happens at the end of June!
