4 Reviews of the Michigan 6

Good tent and fairly easy to pitch. Would have liked a bigger porch and the sheet is not attached so water can get into the porch. Good tent for people but really want a front extension to make this a more comfortable camping experience.

Height of the main living area is good although hard to insert inner poles if you are short like us!

1st outing in our new Michigan 6 this week - 4 nights camping in North Wales, in October. The tent took all that North Wales could throw at it - wind, rain and lots of mud.

Pros:

- very windy weather but the tent was very stable

- very wet weather but the tent (and we) remained dry inside

- lots of room, worth investing in the carpet for Autumn camping as it makes things a little cosier

- easy to pitch between 2 of us - make sure all the doors are zipped closed to prevent problems with tensioning. Pegs and poles are colour coded.

- good to have a separate porch which is where we cooked (although Outwell do not recommend this and the porch is not fire proofed) and left muddy shoes, ensuring the inside of the tent stayed clean

- Perfect for 2-4 people, maybe a little cosy for 6

- Invest in a foot print - it's a lot easier to clean this than the base of the tent!

- Fluorescent guy ropes and pegs show up well in the dark

Cons

- Bath tub ground sheet in the porch only attaches to the body of the tent in 2 places which meant that we did have a small flood as water ran under the tent and into the porch (Is this us and our pitching skills or is it a design fault?!)

All in all a great tent and we look forward to years of happy camping.

We purchased a Michigan 6 following a decision to downsize from our previous tent, a Gelert Horizon 8. Another family member owned the Michigan XL which we really liked (this is now the Michigan 8) so we already had a good idea of what the tent was like. For 2011 it seems Outwell have revamped the design and there is now a decent built-in front porch that protrudes from the front of the tent with a bathtub groundsheet you can clip in to the area to make it completely water proof. This was a major plus point for us as it's big enough to cook in if needed, plus can comfortably accommodate several adults dashing in from the rain and changing footwear before heading into the main part of the tent! Inside there are a few extra window panels which all have blinds you can clip-up to block them off, the usual vents on the pod areas and the living area, and Outwells internal X pole section (which supports the main dome) from which you can easily hang a light. There's plenty of head height, even in the sleeping pods, and the whole tent feels light and airy in the day, yet cosy in the evenings (if that makes sense?!).

Definitely recommended, especially if you're after a tent with a decent porch area without wanting to fork out on a separate extension.

I previously posted this in Michigan L - Just back from our first trial outing in our new Michigan 6. What a fantastic tent! It does everything we asked for when we were choosing a tent. My Mrs has got bee in her bonnet about getting dressed standing up - no problem on that count! Central area is huge - we had our fold out table with built in chairs set up in there the whole time and there was still loads of room. If I was being picky, I would have preferred that the mesh sections on the sleeping room doors had a flap - it might have reduced circulation and helped with the heat. And it goes without saying - the plastic pegs are poo! (what do other people use?) We have the front extension on order and I think that'll make it even better for longer trips - can't wait!
