8 Reviews of the Michigan XL

I bought this tent from gooutdoors at a very reasonable price ฃ200.00 as it has been discontinued and I am very impressed with it ! fantastic tent pure luxury, I was lucky enough to buy the extension to go on the front of it second hand (only used once) and was still able to buy all the accessories for the tent, carpet, ground sheet etc new. I have seen adverts for people selling the whole tent package 2nd hand and would recommend.

This is the first tent that we have bought. We are a family of five and have plenty of space. You could comfortably accommodate I would say six people, but I feel, would get rather crowded if you tried to squeeze any more in.

The first outing with this tent,we experienced possibly the worst weather you could imagine, torrential rain and gale force winds. The tent stayed dry inside, not a drop of rain to be seen and stayed very robust although I'm sure the Deltas also helped! Pitching is really straight forward, poles are all colour coded. You can't go wrong. There are lots of windows and the skylight ones are fab on a clear night. I totally agree with some of the other reviews about the sloping porch door, although this has been remedied in the 2010 model with an extra piece to make the space more usable.

We bought the extension to go with our tent and feel the tent needs this to give more space, certainly on a longer stay. We love the sig and it kept us warm and draft/bug free, though we don't tend to use the detachable one in the porch area. The tent has some nice features, like the stowaway doors, storage pockets,a ring for hanging a light from and cable tidies. All in all we love this tent and feel it is a really great quality tent.

We brought this tent as it has a 3000mm static head compared to our last leaky tent at 1200mm, which was an unheard of brand, cheap and nasty. So this is a real improvement. We had a couple of heavy rainy days and were kept dry inside, also damp towels and coats did not cause much condensation as the vents worked well. It was very relaxing to watch the rain fall on the roof windows. The zip on the front door is on a steep angle but this is made easier by tying a lenth of spare guy line onto the zipper, so did not have to crouch down to undo.

he middle bedroom is a bit smaller than the others due to the wall angle but not a problem. The whole tent is light and spacious. We had enough room for a toilet in the front area and put a mini wind-break around it to provide modesty. An advantage of there not being a ground-sheet in this area. The material is light in colour and on a hot day the sun can warm up inside very quickly and get a bit too warm, which is my minus point. The rear door has a fly screen which lets a cooling breeze through when you want. The plastic pegs supplied are amusing in stony ground so have some metal ones to hand.

Outwell have a good website and you can see a 360 degree tour of this already put up, I found this useful to check how it goes up.

We bought this late last summer and are first time campers so not experts!

It didn't come with instructions but we managed between us to get it up and down first time in just over an hour. I find some poles tricky to get in to the connecting bits.

As others have said, it's not a 9 bed - we went with 7 and it is a bit cramped. As it was so muddy on out first camp, the front area was a muddy swamp, even with the groundsheet down and the door mat was useless with the volume of mud. Tricky getting in, getting shoes off in with the sloped front bit.

This year we've bought the porch which should hopefully help matters, and of course we're hoping to experience camping when it's not solid rain!

Went camping for the 1st time last summer in a little gelert rocky 2 and decided quickly that although we loved camping, we definitely needed something bigger as its no fun sat in the car for hours when the heavens open and you have no where else to go. We bought this tent for ฃ230 as it was a store demo but it had been inside the whole time so was in perfect condition. We've been camping twice in it so far and the only tiny moan, hence the 9 stars, is the flappy door when there are high winds and the lack of porch to cook in. We've managed to resolve both by getting an extension and have got to say it was well worth the investment. Easy to put up, from CAR to CAN, we've done it in about 45 minutes, guyropes pegged, beds set up and beer put in easy reach. Would highly recommend as its light and bright, spacious, you can stand up in the bedrooms as well as the living area, which helps when the OH is 6'2' and our daughter thinks we're proper posh when its all set up. Can't wait for our next trips in June & July.

This is not a 9 man tent! Unless you are Snow White and the 7 dwarfs (+1)! When erected, you can comfortably fit a double airbed only into a bedroom, with not much room to spare. Having said that, this is a well made tent with no leaks in the rain. We had little problems putting it up (although the first time took about an hour). The living area is very spacious and light - plenty of room to sit in on a night. We also bought the footprint, carpet and front extension making a little bit more luxurious. The front extension comes in very handy when the weather is bad, giving you space to cook and keep things dry outside the tent.

The only negative is the front door, which other people have mentioned on the L reviews, which zips from the top to the bottom on a diagonal, meaning you have to crawl on your hands and knees into the corners to zip it up on a night. The pegs are also plastic ones, which we found ok in soft ground, but not sure how they will cope in hard ground! The bedrooms are also very light in the morning (very light material) - good for the day time but not so good at 5am! But these are small niggles and we would recommend this tent to any family up to 6 people. My wife also felt we were proper posh in this tent!

Having never owned a family tent before I have nothing to compare the Michigan too. However I think you'd have to search a long time to find a better family tent. It has plenty for room for six people but is easy to erect. My 11 yr old son and I put it up for the first time in under an hour. Plus it packs away easily. I managed to get the tent, and everything else we needed for a weeks camping into the boot of my little Toyota Yaris.

Nice family tent with plenty of living space and good sized bedroomed pods. Very easy to erect it took 2 adults 45 mins (1 adult would probably take 1 hour). The extension gives you a bit more cooking/living space and I would recommend it for a family. Its very light and airy. If erected properly hold up to high winds. Pockets in the bedroom pods are handy especially for kids. Although they say they are 3 man pods, with airbeds, bedding and kids junk! they are a comfortable 2 man pod. My only negative comment would be that there is no real room to put things like a larder unit, food, and other things that you may use. We used to have a Georgia XL and it had a hexagonal living space inside which allowed a little bit of space where the windows are, you loose that with the Michigan XL. All in all a nice tent which is warm and comfortable in size.
