3 Reviews of the Montana 6SATC

This tent is evidently built to a performance specification, rather than to a price point or a weight. Compared with our 2014 Concorde M and its awning, it's heavier and more solidly built. All the windows, even the diddy quarter lights in the porch, have zipped curtains. The groundsheet is a hefty woven PE. There's a heavy steel pole and webbing straps for the front canopy and the air beams are bigger and heavier than the 2014 series.

More on those air beams: they are still woven PE material, but bigger, stronger and designed to operate at a slightly lower pressure (0.5 bar max) but essentially the construction seems similar to the problematic first generation. The instructions advise letting air out if a very hot day is expected, which seems sensible even if it is a pain in the - ahem - elbow. Had we paid full price for this tent, I'd be feeling a bit cheated, as well as anxious about how it'll be doing in two or three years' time.

The other worry is the lack of guying points across the front end. The canopy will have to come off if the wind gets up, leaving the whole structure worryingly dependent on the four font pegging points. Whilst I like the insect mesh on the front door (absent in the old Concorde) it does mean extra faff getting in and out that way. You can roll it up out of the way, but it's the mesh layer which zips to the groundsheet, not the actual door. The door attaches to the mesh layer with the usual three comedy velcro tabs. I've never subscribed to the 'pitch bum to the wind' doctrine: it'll veer or back right round anyway if you're near the business end of a weather system. We haven't been through a proper blow yet, so we'll have to see how the tent performs in 30mph+.

Back to the happier stuff. I thought it would be rubbish, but the side porch is fab. It has a good, stout aluminium 'eyebrow' pole and a toggle-in groundsheet of the same material as the rest of the tent. We left the inside door and mesh open and kept the fridge, firewood and ice bucket in there, which still left space for muddy boots and hanging wet coats - and you could still get in and out of it. I could see myself hiding in there if the family gets too much. Plus, you can zip open the curtains on the little quarter lights to see what's going on first thing in the morning - like the projecting guard's windows on old railway brake vans. People waste this space by putting a loo in there. It's going to be my reading annexe.

The living area feels enormously spacious, because the 'gothic arch' thing means the walls are mostly vertical. It's also really well ventilated, there being a full vent over the front door. Whilst it's old hat now, having bilateral EHU zips and cable tidies really does help. We hung a stout halogen heater from the central lantern hanging point and it didn't deform the tent as it does with our old semicircular section Concorde. The curtains being zipped rather than toggled means it's trivial to open and close them, so we used them a lot more and felt more connected to the site than we would have done in the old tent.

The bedroom pod only divides into two, and is only 210cms deep - nothing like as swanky as the 2017/18 models but for the three of us the extra width and height was a real bonus. You could probably get three full height camp beds in there without touching the sides. I'll have to check and get back to you. The whole back end of the 2016 Monty is pretty standard Outwell fare: single, openable vent, middle groundsheet pegging point & rainskirt rubbers, although to my eye they've lengthened the roof so the back wall is more vertical, and I think there's more space between the inner and outer.

A big bonus of the horrible 'mocha' colour is how much darker you can keep it inside. We all slept in well after daybreak. I once managed almost 10am before being ejected from my charping pit by Mrs TimCESmith.

I've written before on this site about what an effort it is to pitch an awning with a toggle-in ground sheet, at least so that it'll cope with a 30mph headwind (storms seem to seek us out). This tent gives us similar space to our Concorde M + awning combo with enormously less effort. It's marginally harder to keep warm: you don't have the option of retreating into the 'weekender' section; but the space is more versatile and easy to use. It's also a proper beast to lug about. I know there are bigger tents out there, but honestly this thing is an absolute unit in the bag.

When I bought this tent a couple of months ago I was seriously considering buying a Karsten Lacerta. By lucky hap, an ebay accident meant we got this tent, unused, with carpet, footprint (the wrong year, so too big) and a Sevylor pump for £850. If anyone wants to swap their Lacerta for a 2016 Montana SATC, please DM me immediately, but in the mean time I'm very happy with this tent. I still worry about how it'll perform in a storm and will update once we've had one.

Just bought last year's model online, having only watched Outwell's you tube video. We saved a great deal on new model's price (over £1,000!), put it up in 11 minutes for first practice prior to weekend away for a test run. We didn't put the guy lines out but was otherwise fully erected in 11 minutes. Thought we would need a compressor but pump supplied was very effective. We also invested in a footprint to keep warmer and the bottom of the tent clean. Camped under canvas as a kid loads, in all weathers in frame tent. Have had caravan and campervan in past, but kids grown up so fancied tenting again. Have been away in small polyester tent which was ok but thought we would get a tent that will hopefully last us a long time. Can't wait for first trial away in it hopefully in the next few weeks! Very satisfied with superior quality of product, and can see why they are expensive but will be worth it, loved the smell of the polycotton, broughtt back happy memories. Just need to get booking campsites now!

Lets get this out of the way: the price of this tent is ridiculous. I'm actually quite embarrassed that we spent so much on a tent, when we could have gone to the Maldives. Go figure.

Also, I scared myself with threads about inflatable tents that exploded or deflated. This hasn't happened yet.

We have used this tent twice now, once over the May bank holiday in the UK, and once in France. We're a family of five, the kids are still small.

Good things: it is really solid, spacious, waterproof and wind proof. The zips feel substantial and strong, but don't get caught every five seconds. Love the material, I don't feel like we're getting baked inside, and it feels lovely. I like the panoramic front, it lets me see the kids but doesn't let people see inside. The inflatable thing: brilliant. We can pitch the tent so much quicker than we could with our previous poled tent. It also doesn't take so much time to pack up either. It gives a satisfying pop when you let the air out.

We've been rained on, and we've stayed out in minus temperatures (Maldives anyone?) and the tent has helped keep us warm and dry.

It was ready to go when we first pitched, we didn't need to hook the bedrooms in, and in fact we just leave them up.

Bad things: not so much bad, but we're still trying to figure out what to do with the storm door at the side. We're not going to use it for a private toilet, we instinctively use the front door when it is really raining. At the moment we're using it to store things we don't use (like the bags that contain the sleeping bags or SIMs), or to keep food away from nocturnal animals.

Also, we got the awning as well, but took it back. This tent is massive already, and the canopy that comes with it is enough for us.

A great tent, I'm glad we went for it, and we're looking forward to many years of camping with it.
