1 Reviews of the Monterey 5 Side Extension
By: MazLu Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2011 Rating:
We bought the side extension at the same time as the Monterey 5 tent. We have used the tent three times but the side extension only once as on the last two occasions we were on a festival campsite and there wasn’t room for the extension.
First the negatives, which is why I only gave this an 7;
• We put the tent up in our garden first before we went camping. What a good job we did; the side extension was difficult to put up. We followed the written instructions and diagram exactly and, although they are very clear putting it into practice was quite tricky. It took us 40 minutes to erect the tent and another 30 to put up the extension.
• You will need half as much space again as the tent to spread out the extension on the ground before threading the poles through.
• I would suggest if possible that 3 people put up the extension; preferably one being over 7ft tall, two people to bend and hold the poles in place while the other secures and pegs down the poles. The two of us managed with my husband, who is 5ft 10in, standing on a stool as he had to throw the guy ropes over the top of the tent to the other side while I pulled the extension to fit snugly over the top. Once this is done it was easy to secure and peg down the guy ropes.
• The second night it was a little windy, and the extension flapped about on top of the tent which kept us awake. It was however very secure, and we were in a sheltered spot so I would imagine that in extreme wind the extension may not be as secure. Also it was only the second time we had attached the extension, so next time we may try tightening the guy ropes a bit more.
• Because of the sheer size of the tent and the extension together expect to be charged for two spots at the campsite.
• On reflection the extension is an item we purchased because we wanted it, not because we needed it.
THE POSITIVES
• The extension and tent together look quite striking and does ‘what it says on the tin’.
• We had a lot of positive comments from other campers who were impressed by the Monterey 5 tent and extension.
• It provided us with shelter from the rain enabling us to use the side door without any rain entering the tent (on the two occasions we didn’t use the extension we couldn’t use the side door as the rain came in).
• We were able to leave wet boots in the extension, and they remained dry (however, the campsite was sheltered on four sides, so in a more exposed spot I would imagine this may not be possible).
• This year we intend to camp more often, and will always pack the extension just in case.
• Despite the negatives above we do like the extension and don’t regret buying it.
• I’m sure with more practice we will find it easier to put up.
