Our van is a T4 High Dome. We bought a Outwell Mountain Rd Awning, primarily due to the zip-in ground sheet because of two dogs that are expert escapologists. We've used the Mountain Rd at least twice a year since 2011 and have become more 'expert' in its erection. True, it IS difficult for two persons to erect but the videos on the website were helpful. We have found it easier to erect if you temporarily put the over-campervan guy in first, then install the lengthwise roof poles,(after the rest of the pole supports), then repositioning the awning and presenting it to the camper. We've done this in all weathers and find that mindful planning with one person in charge achieves a sturdy weatherproof and dog-proof living compartment. Suggestions for improvements:

1. A free step for 'shorter' persons (such as us, under 5'9') to firmly fix the apex roof pole.

2. An all round zip on the 'doors' (to prevent expert escapologist dogs escaping.(or children!)

3. The 'mesh' door to be on the outer-side of the vinyl window/door to prevent rips and tears by overeager escapologist dogs.

4. An all-round zip on the vinyl window-doors>

Not had ANY problems with the fibreglass poles but the design of the large surface areas between poles and guys, especially at the front bay, does make the awning prone to buffeting in high winds.

Overall, it is a good product that with slight design amendments would make it an excellent product.

We bought the latest Mountain Road awning for our VW Campervan this Spring and chose it to replace our Khyam awning of last year, which had seemed quite unstable and which had also had broken fibreglass poles. The Mountain Road appeared to have metal poles and be of a bit sturdier structure overall and we chose it after some considerable thought and research.

We have stayed in in twice so far and if I'd been writing this review after the first trip, it'd be a totally different picture, but the second time out showed some failings in the awning so I guess having had two very different experiences is a good way to review the unit.

Firstly, it packs and unpacks well and there are excellent guides to how to put it up all on video on the Outwell website, they're a real bonus in your considerations of what you're buying. However, putting the unit up in the comfort of a show room is quite different to doing so in a field or campsite.

On the first occasion, we stayed in a small well sheltered campsite on quite hard level ground. Putting the awning up was relatively simple, although we were disappointed to find that there were still some fibreglass poles in the pack and that the metal poles did not all hold together quite as well as they might, but once we got the hang of it, it went up quickly enough and then zipping in the bathtub groundsheet was easy. Attaching it to the van and pegging out all the guylines was all pretty easy and held the unit up very well.

Having left the unit and taken the van out on more than one day, we came back to finding it upstanding and very easy to reattach to. The lengthwise poles that run across the top of the roof at the apex and at each side at the top of the sides definitely made for a much more solid and firm structure. Overnight, two of us slept in it and it was comfortable and there was less movement in the wind than experienced in our previous Khyam awning. With the exception of the occasional trip over the doorway where the bathtub groundsheet raised a bit high, overall we were very impressed.

Second time out, we were at a more open campsite and it was a weekend of some winds, ok, so we've put tents up in the wind before but this was NOT easy and fellow campers came to offer their help as it was clear that it was not a task easily carried out by two people.

To be fair, once up, again it seemed to be stable and held up well against the weather. Regrettably, much as with the Khyam, there was a LOT of noise from the actual material blowing in the wind and even though the attachment to the van is adjustable and tightens well, it still let in a good amount of wind.

When taking the van away form the awning, we were left with the problem that the attachment section was left blowing around quite badly in the wind and could not be particularly easily tied back, improvisation held it in place but I did fear that we'd see tears or rips across this section. Fortunately, that didn't happen, but it didn't stop the worry of it.

Overnight, although the bathtub groundsheet held up well, the material was very noisy and made for a less comfortable night's sleep.

The biggest issue came with taking the unit down. In short, if there's two of you and it's windy, you can't loosen all the straps, untie ropes, undo clips and hold it firmly in place all at the same time - result, tent collapse and two badly fractured fibreglass poles. We were not very impressed!

Having raised our concerns with the supplier, the answer came back from Outwell that we'd have to pay for replacements, the damage was due to weather not design. I'm not sure that I accept that the fibreglass poles breaking was solely down to the weather but the overall design. Don't get me wrong, it was quite windy, but, apart from these poles, the tent held up very well and this is very clearly the weakest point in the whole structure. If you're a couple and you (like us) have no chance of engaging the children in helping, then you do need to be very aware of the potential for damage to the poles. Which, if you're touring, could be quite an issue!

If you're a fair weather camper and the prospect of wind and rain puts you off going, then in all seriousness, this is an excellent tent. If however, you don't fear the weather or are touring and will be putting the unit up several times, then you may want to consider the value of taking replacement fibreglass poles. Or another unit.
